But still, they feel noticeably heavy and have a turning radius of a large whale. Nearly undriveable in all of the world's major cities.\n\n The AWD system also honestly isn't the best. Nowhere near as responsive as say an old Audi 5000 Quattro, and most of the time it's only working enough to stop the front wheels from spinning.\n\nIt's too overweight to fight against stuff like the B5 S4 and even the M3, and it isn't quite the same as the other Euro midsize sedans out there. The R is a little bit unwieldy but charming honestly.\n\nWhat really makes it fun is the turbo lag. It takes about 9 years to spool up and when it finally does you're for a surprise.\n\nThe interior is also surprisingly nice. Comfy seats, full leather dash, cool pockets, cup holders that work, and generally just well thought out. Come to think of it, I'm afraid the breed is now dead. I think its last gasp, at least in this country, was Cadillac\u2019s V2 CTS-V, which ended its run in 2014.\r\n\r\nThe V70R\u2019s turning radius is in fact terrible, but it is still perfectly driveable in major cities the world over, assuming the driver is minimally competent.\r\n\r\nThey are fast. Very fast. The turbo goes to work around 2500-3000 rpm, and when it gets to full boil watch out. The brakes are fantastic. The AWD system is neither great nor reliable. The cabin is finished to a high standard and is an extremely comfortable place in which to spend time. The factory stereo sounds surprisingly good. Gobi is a pretty conservative choice, but some leather options are stunning. The cable-operated shifter is below average.\r\n\r\nThe best parts of this car are its fantastic engine, shared with the contemporary Focus RS (Ford owned Volvo in those days and was busy trying to run it \u2013 and Jaguar \u2013 into the ground, and it is hard to believe that China's Geely would prove a far superior steward of the marque); the supremely comfortable cabin; and the relatively subdued looks. Utility is excellent; with integrated pop-up seat boosters, a vast cargo area and an optional 3rd row, this wagon wipes the floor with modern crossovers in the usability department as it does on the road.\r\n\r\nRs are relatively vice-free, but don't expect the reliability of a 80s 200 series. There was a comment about \u201caddressing\u201d the 4C system, I\u2019m not sure what that was about. 4C dampers are not particularly unreliable, and since replacements cost less than $300 it is pretty much a non-issue. Spirited driving will over-stress the AWD, which will make its displeasure known in nasty and expensive ways. Online support is excellent, Rs are now very well-known quantities with an enthusiast following and every issue under the sun has been documented many times over. A dealer will quote you $2000 to replace a dead xenon headlight, but you can fix it yourself with a new $129 Valeo booster. A lot of issues are like that, and online communities are friendly and offer a wealth of information. This one has the typical 04 console scratches. Big deal - swap to 05+. This one has the factory subwoofer. Gold - this car already sounds good with the premium audio but the sub will transform it to a concert hall. The has the aftermarket exhaust, and the manual 6 speed, helping remove the torque limit the 04-05s had in auto so you get all 295 lb ft to supply you in the most comfortable leather seats ever.\r\n\r\nThey're a little needy at times but there's a healthy and vibrant, helpful, super knowledgeable community of Volvo wagon (and R) enthusiasts who can help diagnose over the internet. If it's out there for sale in the marketplace, we'll find it and comment. This is a wolf (OK maybe a small wolf by today's standards) in sheep's clothing, and you can't go wrong. Just don't expect it to be the knight in shining armor if you whip it and put it away wet. It will let you know, ten fold, and your wallet will cry. I had an 04 V70R auto for 5 or 6 years that I put about 80k miles on. When I sold it, I had $15k in receipts for mods/maintenance (doing 80-90% of the work myself). The 4c shocks/accelerometers can wear out fairly quickly though and these cars ride terrible when it's not in proper order. They are a dream when the 4c is working properly though. Not too bad of a DIY but the rear 4c connectors are an absolute nightmare to get to and even worse if you plan to put them back in the correct location. Much easier to break the connection loose and then zip tie the new ones in place. Volvo must have installed these before the subframe was in the car while along the assembly line.\n\nMy major maintenance items were the ABS control module, the 4c system, the alternator and the cam seals. But when the maintenance is addressed, these cars are some of the best long roofs you can own. I also had the fuel pump leak which is covered by Volvo only if the car was sold new in Northern/cold states. Luckily mine was originally sold in NJ even though I lived in VA. I contacted Volvo NA and they took care of it free of charge. \n\nA front mount intercooler, down pipe and CAI will transform this car into a beast. The FMIC is a highly recommended upgrade as the stock intercooler was a pathetic afterthought when Volvo realized temps were too high. They basically split off a pipe from the IC that is sandwiched in between the condenser and radiator to put that tiny little joke of an IC in the grill. \n\nI removed my console, cleaned, scuffed, primed with plastic adhesion promoter and then used some SEM vinyl dye to fix it. I think the color was called smoke or something along those lines. It was a perfect color match and really freshened up the interior.\n\nI also had my ballasts go out for the lights every year or two and would just buy used ones on ebay. Not sure how but water will get inside and since the ballasts are in a cavity on the bottom of the light housings, that is where the water pools. I took the time to retrofit projectors in place of the standard reflector housings that made a massive increase in light output. I still have a build thread on swedespeed for mine under this same username if anyone ever wanted to pursue it. I detailed step by step instructions IIRC and documented all maintenance/mods. \n\nThese are great cars overall. My wife and I still miss the ole Swede. As others have rightly said, these cars are a ton of fun, and unless you know to look for the wheels/badge, total sleepers (though in Sonic Blue mine was a bit less so). The acceleration is fun every single time, but I was more surprised by how well it handled, given the size/appearance. Agree that the turning radius is its achilles heel, but hardly a deal breaker. Think of it like a multi-tool of vehicles: fast, comfortable, stylish, oh - and if you happen to want to haul three kids and several weeks of food to a cottage in northern Ontario, with two bikes on the top? So, to compare with two cars that have been mentioned in this thread, and which I also own: Compared with the E46 M3, of course in the M3 the connections between the drivers neurons and the tire contact patches is more direct, but the V70R does not seem to give up much to the E46 in \u2018real world\u2019 speed in my opinion. Turbo lag has been mentioned, but I find the torque readily accessible from about 2000 rpm in the V70R. I also own a B5 S4 Avant - which has been mentioned here as a comparator. Its turning circle is definitely tighter. That said, the V70R is a daily driver and I live downtown in a city that has some old narrow streets, and have never found this turning radius issue poses a problem except in scenarios where I desire a quick u-turn in a tight spot. It becomes a 3 point turn. So: The B5 is more chuckable but the V70R is where I would rather be for a long trip. The seats in the R are superbly comfortable and yet supportive for \u2018Spirited\u2019 driving. As for expenses, hey, it\u2019s a decade old performance vehicle. It just happens to have massive load carrying capacity and practicality. If it had two less doors and no cargo hatch, and an Italian badge, the maintenance expenses would seem paltry! Engine and trans mounts, A/C system parts, window motors, top end oil leaks, driver\u2019s seat motor, and other stuff. The automatic had a few different transmission problems. The R model ate brake pads like I go through bacon (stock calipers and pads -dealer installed). So these weren\u2019t exactly Toyota-level-drive-till-you-die cars. That said, as the (correctly aforementioned) vehicular version of a multi-tool, they are great.
