Was it done by someone else? A professional restoration facility? Are the invoices among the receipts pictured for work on the engine and gearbox work?\n\nAgain, I genuinely don't want to badmouth this car or the Seller. Let me stop there.\n\nThere are things that look wonderfully well done --the seats, for example. There are also things that don't match my expectations ( which are based upon years of living with Sunbeams ), specifically because, at the current bid level, I would want the car to be of unquestionable, fully documented and stand-out condition in all departments. \n\nFurther to your question: It is Very Difficult to determine the quality of work performed on this car. From the photos it seems the paint work was done in a home garage. Nothing implicitly wrong with that, and it is merely cosmetic. \n\nI Am willing to say that the surface finish of the paint does not Remotely resemble the paint as it came on Rootes cars. It might respond well to a color sanding and buff, but that would be both costly, above the currently high bid, and not guaranteed to give suitable results: it is another unknown.\n\nIt's really impossible to assess the state of the engine. Who rebuilt it? Are there invoices? There is, as far as I am aware, no compression date or better, leakdown information, so --as with many restored, used cars, one is at the mercy of chance.\n\nAnd the gearbox was worked on as well, albeit, from the written report, merely a replacement of seals, not a full rebuild. But again, it is not known by whom or to what level; once again, no disrespect intended: there is just too much that remains unknown.\n\nBoth the engines and gearboxes on these cars are pretty darn reliable. And the replacement of the front suspension with series V parts is a plus: there are no king pins or trunions to work loose, and if desired, the adjustment of camber can be easily achieved.\n\nIf you want to consider this car, to what end would you use it? Would it be a daily driver for you? Would you try to make it a show car? \n\nI don't want to comment further before I know what your needs or expectations for this car might be. The Alpine is a delightful car to drive: it's agile, attractive and could do with a little more power ( whether its engine has been upgraded to a 1725 or not ). The fact that this early Series car --my preference for its 50's design shown so eloquently in those timely tall tail fins-- has the later, larger engine and updated front suspension are strong plusses.\r\n\r\nYou asked what you might be able to do to this car to make it better. There's a kit ( readily found in the Forum of Sunbeam Alpine Owners Club of America www.SAOCA.org/forum ) that converts the rear shocks from lever style to telescopic shocks. This helps handling and Vastly broadens the range of shocks to choose from. I have a pair of the conversion brackets on my car and they are robust and Very Well made. \r\n\r\nAs an alternative to making that switch, if you want stiffer performance at the back end of the car, you can upgrade the viscosity of the lubricant inside the lever shocks. This is what racers did 'in the day'. When the cars were new; making such a drastic change as converting shock type was often prohibited.\r\n\r\nAnd there are further upgrades you can make for performance: Weber carbs ( requires a manifold -- I can help you there ), a header, larger wheels and tires. \r\n\r\nOf all the components that offer upgrades, tires have changed more since this car was made than any other component. That's a place you can make tremendous performance gains. The range of 13\" performance tires, however, is quite limited, so uprating your wheels to at least 15\" diameter will avail you a wider tire choice. ( Be careful not to go too wide: fender lips can interfere with too radical a tire section )\r\n\r\nIf you win the auction, ask BaT if they will put us in touch. I can offer you tons more suggestions for the Alpine. It would not be a bad choice; some of the best possible upgrades have already been made, and if you've a mind, the cosmetics could be tidied up at your leisure.\r\n\r\nBest of Luck either way.
