The receipt for ~$5k did not include the cost of the engine. It was mostly labor charges along with misc parts such as gaskets, filters, o-rings, tune up parts & injectors. The previous owners collection manager said the motor was compression tested and given a clean bill of health prior to install. However, they were not able to provide me with a physical read out of the test - they did not bother because they planned on keeping the car at the time. I seem to recall the lower dash is different on the airbag equipped cars. My M6 with a build date of Dec 1986 is about 400 earlier than this car and has a similar steering wheel and dash configuration, although in Canada we did not get the full leather dash or the rear cooler, rather heated seats. \n\nSeems like a nice car. Regarding the engine, I suppose a buyer is taking a bit of a chance on any E28 M5 or E24 M6 as the engine repair cost could be the bulk of the value. Two or three years ago market values were less, and a replacement engine would put you upside down. This is an awesome car. It should be a great deal more enjoyable as a toy the a daily car. The clutch on these cars is the highest effort clutch I have ever driven in a road car, and in traffic it gets to be a real leg ache. It was the last of the single disc clutches in high performance manuals. For the occasional fun drive though it's no big deal. It's great that the Catalytic converters have been replaced as that was a big expense. Mine was replaced under warranty, but was 2500 in 1989. Swapping an S38 for a lower mileage one is the less costly way to go rather than paying for a full rebuild - a lot less, but as you can see here - it would have had a positive impact on the pricing had it been rebuilt at least at these levels. However if the auction bid was closer to the eBay final bid then adding another $10K or more for an engine rebuild to keep the original engine would have meant the seller would have been under water.
