The leather interior reminded some of a broken-in saddle, which fit because the owner was taming new industries and riding roughshod over authority the way cowboys did in the old west.\r\n\r\nThe compound of structures the car was nestled amongst when not being driven was as imposing as the car itself. Clapboard Colonial-styled buildings whose gables looked out towards the sea and big windows that captured every breeze.\r\n\r\nNumbers were important to the owner of the new Packard Twelve. They are what made him a man of wealth. But they also give context to the car itself and the time in which it was significant. 1939 was the 40th anniversary of the first Packard, as well as the last year this type would be offered. Less than 500 were produced, each selling for over $5,000. The fact that the average American family earned less than $1,400 a year made such opulence and excess the subject of both scorn and envy for folks not living in the compound.\r\n\r\nWealth had its privileges . One of those was spending more than three times the average Joe\u2019s annual income on a car that would just see service in the summer and be covered in quilts and tarps in the carriage house the other nine months a year.\r\n\r\nBesides wanting the best, the old man needed something as big as the Packard just to haul his brood when they went into town. It was a common sight to see a few of the older ones atop the folded down luggage rack at the rear of the car and a couple more on the running boards on each side. It was a miracle they all made it to their teens, though the war would make sure not all of them would see much beyond that. History conspired to be sure even fewer would grow old.\r\n\r\nBut when the Packard was new and the family was young, the only thing they had to fear was fear itself and nobody was scared. America would always be strong. Packard would always be the best car money could buy. Democracy would always be the envy of the world.\r\n\r\nThe older boys would treat the grand convertible like it was a flathead Ford, returning home after dates covered with dust from the local gravel roads and the cabin strewn with empty beer cans and occasionally ladies underthings. Simon, a full-time employee, would pull the car into the carriage house and get to work, making it look brand new again and positioning it out front before the old man ever woke up and went out to get his Wall Street Journal off the front porch.\r\n\r\nOf course, the whole Packard company would be gone in less than two decades and a different massive four door convertible would have an even bigger impact on the family. In the 1950's and 1960's, these cars were relatively affordable, as the \"classic car\" hobby was both a lot smaller, and people's desires for the latest features and styling meant these dusty old relics from a bygone era were just \"used cars\". A 12 cylinder Packard, while so special in 1939, was a car so expensive and difficult to maintain in the 1960's that only a Packard enthusiast would be a potential owner. It was likely the owner, getting the car ready to go to a show, and trying out his new polisher, that ran through the top coat to the primer underneath. He probably cursed himself, and then drove the car to the show, because, in the collector car world, a 12 cylinder Packard, especially the last production year, and especially a convertible sedan, is royalty. No matter how tatty the car becomes, it will always draw a crowd.\r\n\r\nI was a little disappointed in the video. While it showed seemingly every imperfection, the \"driving\" was only like 10 seconds at the end. It did, however, show two of the key selling points of a Packard 12, those being quietness and smoothness. Did you notice the ever so subtle movement of the car when the starter was engaged? When the car was running, there was no sound. When the car went into gear and drove, there was no engine noise, no vibration, and just effortless movement.\r\n\r\nI've had a number of Packard 8's. On your first outing with one, you learn to look at the tachometer before pressing the starter button. The car is so quiet and smooth that you cannot hear or feel it running at idle. When the car drives, it's likewise silent and smooth. While you still need to change gears, you can hop to third by 25mph (where the car would be around idle speed) and effortlessly, silently, and smoothly accelerate to 80mph. You also learn to drive an 8 cylinder pre-war Packard using the cormorant's upswept wings, which are quite far away from you, to mark the center of the lane. Its original owner kept it garaged and in excellent condition, and a succession of collectors maintained it in fine original condition for the next fifty years. The car was sold new in 1939 by the Smithson and Raymond Packard Agency in Chicago, Illinois. Apparently the original purchasers were the Lehmann family of Oak Park, owners of \u201cThe Fair\u201d department stores in Chicago. This was a famous chain of discount department stores in the Chicago area, founded in 1875 and ultimately sold to Montgomery Ward in the 1950s.\r\n\r\nThe car was very well cared for and most likely chauffeur driven during the Lehmann family\u2019s ownership which ended when the car was acquired in the early 1950s by a very young Tom Barrett, who would later become one of the giants of the car collecting world. Mr. Barrett passed away in 2004 after owning thousands of collector cars and founding the world famous Barrett - Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, AZ. In the 1950s he was buying and selling classic cars in his hometown of Oak Park, and clearly jumped at the chance to acquire this fine and rare local Packard.\r\n\r\nIn around 1955 he sold the car to Donald Schmidt of Hinsdale, Ill. I spoke with Mr. Schmidt in 2003 who recalled that he paid about $3000 for the car, always kept it garaged and enjoyed driving it on special occasions. He also sent me some photos of the car during his ownership. \r\n\r\nIn the late 1960s he in turn sold it to Bob Kappell, a collector from the Chicago area who later took the car to Oklahoma when he moved there. I also spoke with Mr. Kappell in 2003, who related that he drove the car very little and did some engine work at some point, but maintained the original finish, chrome, and interior. In the early 1980s he was approached by Tom Barrett who was interested in acquiring the car again, and a price of $65,000 was agreed on, over 20 times the amount Mr. Barrett had sold it for thirty years previously! \r\n\r\nIn 1985 Barrett sold the car to Richard and Linda Kughn, who were amassing one of the world\u2019s finest (and largest) collections of classic cars in Detroit. The Packard was on display in their museum until it was sold by RM Auctions on November of 2002, along with many other cars from their collection. I believe the sale price was $82,500. A year later the car was offered for sale on eBay in Poughkeepsie NY and I was the winning bidder at $85,200.\r\n\r\nI had the Packard for a year and loved it but couldn\u2019t afford to keep it. I listed it on eBay and sold it to a collector in the DC area in July 2004, for $110K. The car had beautiful factory original green leather upholstery but he chose to change it to the current brown. At some point he sold it and it was shipped to New Zealand. This is when @Tasmaniandevil must have known the car.\r\n\r\nI believe the NZ owner had passed away when it was shipped back to the states and sold at Gooding\u2019s Scottsdale auction in January 2019, for $106,400, to the dealer who made up the story about Cubs owner McCormick being the first owner. They offered it for $199K and I assume sold it to the current owner - I don\u2019t know for how much but they obviously had plenty of room to negotiate.\r\n\r\nWhen I owned it the car looked great - it looks to me like one of the subsequent owners must have bought every Packard accessory he could find on eBay and hung them on the car, appropriate or not, including the front bumper guard, glass hood ornament, incorrect whitewalls (I had put brand new correct whitewalls on just before I sold the car - who knows what happened to those), Trippe lights, trunk rack and external trunk (hello - it already HAS a trunk).\r\n\r\nOverall it\u2019s a great car and I loved it - it was a great driver and I had some real fun with it. I wish I still had it - with the original green leather!\r\n\r\nYesterday I posted some photos from my ownership, on the AACA / CCCA forum. Interestingly, R-R built a V-12 for a while, the powerplant for the Phantom III, which I think had problems and was not terribly successful. And, to complete the circle, Packard redesigned and successfully built thousands of V12 airplane engines for combat aircraft in the second World War. Here's why:\r\n\r\nWith the ascendance of BaT to an eminent position in the business of buying and selling of collector cars and related items, the standard of what is acceptable in presentation has changed quite a bit, and for the better. Comments by viewers on BaT have led to the quality and numbers of photos improving, as well as reducing the number of irrelevant musical soundtracks in favor of just hearing the car and the actual narration. If you think about what listings on BaT (which started out just republishing listings from other sources) USED to look like, versus what they look like now, the difference is huge and it has affected the entire industry in a positive way. \r\n\r\nMany of the sellers on BaT are also accomplished photographers, at least of cars- Dean Laumbach, 911r, Cascadia, wob- that's just a few and not nearly a complete list. \r\n\r\nIf you look at these photos, they are actually very well done. Clear, sharp, and I think accurately depict the car for sale. They do not include the kind of artful romanticism that some of the best BaT lenspeople can bring to a shoot, but that's okay. My point is that if these photos had accompanied a listing five years ago, they would have probably been thought to be outstanding. Now they are just business as usual, maybe not even quite that, as the seller came in for some criticism on his choice of backgrounds. \r\n\r\nI understand that, really- with a beautiful old car like this Packard Twelve, one DOES want to see it in front of a country club, yacht basin, or opera house. But I find it interesting and in a way informative that photos which are just very well made and adequate for the purpose are criticized because, essentially, they aren't pretty enough. Maybe a deal was made after the auction closed? If this were an earlier car, 32-34, it would have been worth car more than this, but despite being technically more advanced cars (IFS, hydraulic brakes, bigger engine) the later V12s do not generally bring the money that the earlier Twelves do.
