I hadn't scanned all my negatives when I put the FSJ Buyer's Guide together - https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/512015 - or I might have included it. However, there might be a group shot that included it, it would have been shown with several others in a parking lot back in the late '90's. \r\n\r\nThe bubbling paint and surface rust underneath of course are unfortunate, but the rear quarters don't seem to be rotted through, and the floor pans look good. Repair and repaint of rust would be a good idea, but driving it like it is would still give many years more service. All the worn and missing items can be found at BJs offroad - headliner, door panels, carpet... Simply needs some TLC... a good cleaning and rust converter, paint/undercoat etc. If this spent most of it's time in Virginia it wouldn't have seen a lot of regular salt, but enough to be unfortunate. Surely the DOT's can come up with a better option than corrosive salt for roads... besides, that can't be good for fish and plants either... didn't the ancient Romans salt the land to keep it from growing things? \r\n\r\nRecords show mileage over 100K, believable... although considering the age and the clear fact that this has been used and loved, it could be also be over 200K, but even if it was, it's still a solid looking Jeep worth attention and recovery. I've owned several that came to me in this kind of condition, it took some effort, but they all cleaned up nicely. However, for the bubbling paint I'd recommend \"professional\" help. If this thing ends up in a climate where rust isn't a major problem, somewhere out west where roads aren't salted... something about east of the big muddy and north of the mason dixon that really messes up metal... of course Minnesota rots their bridges and vehicles out with salt, and the beaches of Florida have eaten their share of vehicles as well. :) The battle against rust and emissions tests... one we need to win to keep these FSJs going. Despite the rust, this looks very nice, like the color scheme, wouldn't change it. I forgot that my '83 J10 had that bubbling paint up on the roof by the windshield... and it's been in the PNW its entire life! Mine is undergoing a repaint right now... we cleaned things up, prepped properly, primed and when it was sitting there in a shop it started rusting again... so it's not necessarily the prep work, but the metal itself!\r\n\r\nIt's the metal that car makers were using back then... recycled steel. BMW had tons of problems with it, forgot about how my '71 BMW bubbled and rotted away rather quickly over in Germany... but they really salt the roads there when it snows... but still... it was rusting where salt hadn't been... like my J10 and others from that era. HOWEVER, since it's not in areas that are usually hit by salt spray a good body shop should be able to clean those areas up, stop the rust chemically and refinish in those areas. Those colors should be easy to match and may not require a full repaint... hard to say... I'm not a painter or a body guy... I've repaired rust and such, but the finish work is best left to the professionals. :) \r\n\r\nThat's good news this came from Arizona... I've seen a few Wagoneers up in the New England states that looked like Swiss cheese! If it weren't for them having frames they wouldn't be operational at all! \r\n\r\nThe other good news is a lot of the common rust points have replacement panels available. \r\n\r\nI agree with you... keep this thing clean, topside and underneath, in a garage, off the salted roads - or if used on the salted roads rinsed off right away and then brought in to dry off... I tried to keep my '68 Mustang from rotting away in the Chicago area, but it was so cold that even running it through a car wash on those rare winter thaws resulted in doors freezing shut... or open... :) not fun. I don't miss winter weather... clouds are fine, sunshine is over rate... that's why my sig file for years has been: \"Snohomish County, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold\" (and it's not actually mold... it's usually just a bit of mildew... ... although that one '53 Willys Wagon that had been sitting in the woods clearly had MOSS, not mold... but it sounds better saying mold, mildew or moss... :) thanx for pointing that out... when I saw those bubbles in the paint it reminded me of my '71 BMW 2500... what a nice car that the tinworms got... actually, it's even sadder because I'd sold it to a friend, he didn't get after it right away and by the time the next tech inspection rolled around it was too far gone. I got that tended to today, and I'm uploading it here. This Jeep drives and handles well on the highway; I've gone as fast as 80 mph and no issues. The truck runs strong with a very smooth ride, good suspension, and it brakes well with no pulling. Power steering and brakes work nicely. When I bought the Jeep out of Arizona it had ancient off-road tires on it. I put on the Hankook Kinergy ST tires and what a difference! These tires only have about 1,000 miles on them and they are quiet and deliciously smooth-running.
