Possibly the most iconic car ever released on the public (along with the Willys Jeep and VW Beetle of course). The recent BAT Question of the week \"What\u2019s Your Definition of the Term \u201cSupercar\u201d? had a bunch of responses but in my opinion the Supercar started here. With the Countach. I was the first car that ticked all the supercar boxes. A mid engineed masterpiece with the engine mounted longitudinally wrapped in an that outrageous Marcello Gandini body. But the Countach was more then just looks. It was an engineering achievement. Yes there were prior mid engineed sports cars that predate the Countach (Gt40, De Tomaso Pantera) but they had their radiators mounted in the nose which prevented that assault on the senses low nose that make the Countach to arresting to look at. Gandini and his team had to re-imagine the entire idea of a mid engine car and found a way to move the cooling system mid-ship. It was a huge accomplishment and opened the door for the supercar (and hypercar) as we know it today. That incredible rear wheel cutout treatment, tailights unlike anything seen before or since and front turn signal lenses worn like automotive mascara. In a modern world of organic car design this nearly 50 year old sharp-edged angular THING is still as shocking today as it was when it was born. And it takes on an entire new bad boy image with festooned with the added styling elements of the later cars. I true don't have a preference between the two because... they are two different cars. But there is no denying, this is Gandini's greatest creation.
