I installed a standard big-bore kit which as I recall brought the displacement up to 2.2 liter. It was a blast to drive, and didn't really need any more stuff. I installed a top that I got mail order from someplace I found in the Road & Track classifieds, and by the time I sold it, the sidecurtains had been stolen. Never replaced those. Definitely not a winter car, but still usable if that's all you got. The only reason for a 5-speed is if the fifth speed is an overdrive ratio for long trips on the freeway. In which case, don't take the TR, take the Lexus in your garage instead. I looked through the invoices and saw some machine work charges, but didn't see the sleeve and piston purchase and what size were installed. Stock is 83mm and there are oversize at 86mm, 87mm, 87.5mm and 89mm. The best value is 87 or 87.5mm. Some people think there is also some overheating issues with 89mm. On my TR3 I went with the 87.5.\n\nRalphie60 - yep the 5th gear is for the freeway. I found an OD transmission for mine. While you are right about long trips, when there are Triumph Club drives with a dozen others, and we are going from San Franciso area down to LA for a Triumph event, that higher gear sure is nice. This fall we have Triumphest 2017 out in Arizona. All the forces are trying to shove those two shafts apart with the needle bearings eventually failing causing the gears to separate enough to chip teeth. The trans makes enough noise in the days leading up to that big \"bang\" moment to warn you that the trans is running low on oil and bearing failure is right around the corner. The Toyota W58 5 speed swap is sort of like hitting the \"easy\" button. Personally I would have gone with the standard trans with an A-type overdrive but that's just me. Since this car did not come equipped with OD (No \"O\" suffix to the VIN - the \"L\" stands for LHD), I could see going the 5 speed route as the going rate for A-types is getting up to where the W58 is the cheaper route. OD makes a world of difference in these cars for highway/club drives. Even around town 3rd + OD is a nice inbetween gear when 3rd is too high and 4th a touch too low.\n\n@seth fisher Hardtops for the knuckle dragger cars are out there but not common. From working on my car, I've learned from the old timers and seen first hand that the original parts were much better than what you can buy today, in most cases. I shudder to think about the parts that were ordered from Victoria British. It seems so common to find them with these cheap interior kits that you can buy from Moss and I like the wheel but it can't accommodate the turn signals or horn so they are then re-located likely to that funky switch on the left of the wheel. Those carbs seem like a strange choice when correct SUs are available and easily enough rebuilt. Even the VIN plate is not original and the way the number is etched is incorrect. Since they didn't change it to one of the more desirable models, I'm assuming it's correct, but if I was buying I'd want some documentation around that. Apologies for sounding like a cranky, get off my lawn old man (I'm actually about half the age of the average TR3 owner), but I just think that if I'm going to drive a 50 year old car, I want it to have some character, and these type of restorations seem to take all of that out of it. The finned aluminum sump is a cool part, adds a bit to the oil capacity as well. The header hiding under that wrap looks like the good one British Frame and Engine used to sell, sadly it's no longer available. The custom exhaust looks to be done right.\n\nThat rack and pinion upgrade is very desirable upgrade on these cars, it replaces the worm and peg steering box, really transforms the way a TR3 drives. The unfortunate side of the upgrade is you lost the original steering wheel and turn signal switch. The turn signal switch appears to be a manual job on the dash in the location of the stock overdrive switch. No more self canceling turn signals. I believe there is a solution for this that retains the stock steering wheel and turn signal head.\n\nThe swap to an alternator can make sense as you are putting additional load on the system with that electric fan. That voltage regulator box on the firewall is now unnecessary, you typically leave it there for originality. That invoice for fixing the electrical gremlins points to the party guilty of making that mess out of the wiring... Luckily, that is a very easy fix!\n\nGetting the engine to run well with those 2 inch SU carbs is no small feat. Would be nice to know what cam was used, and no vacuum advance line to the unknown dizzy has me wondering how the car behaves on the street. Seller??? \n\nThe Toyota gearbox swap is all too common, the HVDA conversion is quite proven at this point. Only caveat is you need to be careful what donor car the gearbox came out of, as getting good ratios is not a given. \n\nI do like the clean look of no hoodsticks, but if you are going to use the car (please, DRIVE THIS CAR!!!) only the true diehard can exist without a proper hood and sidescreens. The tonneau cover will only get you so far.\n\nVery nicely done, great car for the right person. I bought the car as finished by the previous owner who did put the $60,000 into the car--and I agree that it must have been a labor of love as he had no hope of recovering his expense. Thirdly, the comment on the oversized carbs is on target. There is a narrow range to tune these to for it to run smoothly and if the car sits for a couple of weeks and the carbs get dry, the car is hard to start. Once warmed up the car runs smoothly at all speeds and sure has plenty of power, but the car would probably be easier to manage for the occasional driver with a return to smaller SU's--easily done through Moss Motors. With twenty-two cars and seven motorcycles in my collection, nothing gets driven very much--hence the low mileage--and at 75, it is time to reduce the collection to more manageable proportions. Looks from the receipts that the paint job was around $5k. From my experience that gets a pretty nice driver quality but won't win any shows. Also note that they painted the underside black - it should be body color. Impossible to correct now. \r\nIf a restoration is done right the age should not matter - it depends on how it was kept. Looks like this was kept very well.\r\nTop frames are available on eBay for a couple hundred max, restorable side curtains are about the same. Send the side curtains to TRF with $800 after they have been fitted to the car (have the new top installed first). All in the cost of closing in this TR would probably run about $2000 parts and labor.\r\nMy biggest concern is the pretty engraved re-pop VIN tag. This VIN tag would get a warning notice from auction houses such as Mecum that there may be a VIN discrepancy.
