The only thing missing was a desk plaque that read \"Miss Moneypenny.\"\n\nI asked her about tours and in the most proper English accent she politely explained that she was so terribly sorry but the place was closed for a fortnight while the employees were on holiday. But if we didn't mind too much she would go back to the shop floor, turn on the lights, and let us walk around the workshop. I have had others showing hundreds of thousands of miles and this will happen on all Virage models with digital odometer at some point or another in their lifetime. Rudernst has the data right about the history and design I think he is a little harsh on Virage.\nVirage is like a Ferrari 400i- not flashy, expensive to maintain- and a real deal, old school front engine real wheel drive motor car.\nLike the Ferrari, you had a choice of manual or auto- the manual cars seem to be worth 20% more......\nI loved my Virage. Driving it was an event. Yes, it is a parts bin car, what Aston is not? Of course it was outdated the day rolled off the line- but that was sort of the point. The car is a brute.\nAfter properly serviced, my Virage ran quite well and was dependable. Budget $3000-$4000 every other year or so for a major service. \nIt drives like you think it would- two tons, not quite enough power for weight but still moves along well, stops well, Understeers if you push it. The car is a true GT so don't expect t be a nimble sports ride.\nAston was hand building a few cars a week when the Virage was made and that is part of the appeal. The next in line DB7 with the i6 had robotic assembly. Over 7000 DB7s were built- more than the combined output of AM going back to day one previously.\nThe Virage is penultimate handbuilt Aston- the next V series cars were also hand built and had the rear suspension A=frame assembly issues sorted out.\nThe Virage is like any mutt- some will hate it, some will love it. Objectively, it is the only \"affordable\" hand built Aston left. You can buy a modern DB9, DB7, Vanquish, Vantage- many options in this price range to consider. It has only been traded to me since the service by its owner due to pairing down his collection.\n\nThese Virage Astons are indeed the forgotten son of the Aston Ford era and quite expensive in the day and when new at approximately $250k per. Today, they seem to have a small following, but due to their limited manufacture and import to the USA, they do seem to be a reasonable purchase and seem to be rising in the marketplace, slowly and steadily, again if they do not need a boat load of money spent on them and I am the seller, service agent, restorer and the guy who would be taking your money. Make sure you do a proper inspection or make sure you find someone educated to help you. If sorted well, they are elegant sports cars for grand touring. \n\nThey suffered from electronic odometer that goes crazy, but at this point no one seems to care to want to spend the money repairing this item. I agree that all Virages should have documentation to certify their mileage. It was my idea to install an alternate odometer as per Lagonda simply as an alternative and therefore not changing the interior in anyway.\n\nSuffolk Red is not my first color choice for the Virage, but alas, this one is as per factory original and thus should remain. It is extremely nice that it is an original 5-speed manual, it does make a huge difference in the Virage not having the 3-speed Chrysler torqueflite automatic gearbox that most came with. At least with the 5-speed manual you can take advantage of the 5.3 liter V8 engine and its torque throughout the rev range. I have driven these cars throughout Europe and across the USA, they like to be used rather than sit and can be incredibly enjoyable trans-continental touring cars.\n\nTotally agree, the suede headliner is way cool!\n\nI agree the 850 BMW is a great car, I have owned several included the CSI variant. Its is without a doubt a better car, but it is Germanic, the interior smells of plastic and it will never have the British elegance of the Aston. Also, the Aston may actually have a degree of investment potential based on its rarity. That said, the Aston if only for someone who wants an Aston whereas the BMW is in a league with other German sportscars of the era such as the 928 and 928 GTS, also better cars, but not an Aston. :)\n\nIt is indeed an Aston from the hand made Newport Pagnell era and if one were to have the ability to have toured the factory and workshops in the day, this and the workers love for what they were building would make you a believer in the brand and models or at least respect them and there place in the automotive world. It did not matter who you spoke to at Newport Pagnell, from the receptionist \"Miss Moneypenny\" throughout the workforce, the love was infectious.\n\nI agree wholeheartedly with the comment about the original wheels, if you search Tim Cottinghams Aston Martin Picture Gallery (I am not sure I am allowed to send the link on Bring a Trailer), go to the Virage section, this will give you a proper look at the Virage model. Photos, 6, 8, 9, 12 and 20 will show you the factory deep dish 17\" wheels which make the car look so much better. I have over the years updated several Virages with these factory wheels.\n\nI do not think the Virage and its handling is as dreadful as one of the gentlemen below make it out to be. I will say, the addition of the 17\" wheels does help. The rear suspension geometry is not ideal by any means, but the Virage is not meant to be a track day car and if used as a touring car, it holds its own quite well if set up and aligned properly. I can say I have owned a V600 Le Mans personally, but sold it to a friend in Germany, with that power its handling was worse than the standard car in my mind and the extremely supercharged power was not ideal for the roads and speed limits here in the USA. Also, he is right, they were not prepared for the extra power and can be costly when they go boom! That said, the standard V8 that has been around since the late 1960's it is bullet proof and the 4-valve heads have never given any problems.\n\nI hope some of these comment are constructive and will help educate on the Virage model. Wasn\u2019t easy - the place makes you lightheaded. Some hopefully helpful observations:\n\n\u2022 Non-interference engine with a timing chain (forgot to ask about the tensioners) built by Mick Wilson (name plate intact). Motor has a presence all its own. \n\u2022 The Suffolk Red is in good shape and, surrounded by other (incredible) exotics, stood out. Pictures do this car NO justice. BRG and dark blue seem to present much better (in the factory sales brochure) for a high-end GT than this color, but that\u2019s probably factored into the reserve.\u00a0\n\u2022 Those cracks near the VIN/manufacturers plate are a non-issue; just some drying of the factory-applied undercoating on the top of front fender wells.\n\u2022 Audi headlights, btw, are glass and look better in person, washed by Porsche nozzles :)\u00a0\n\u2022 Don\u2019t laugh: the interior is, in a word, sumptuous. Very comfortable seats, tilt wheel, neutral smell. Has a motorized shoulder harness that does not have to be used (watch your head upon egress).\u00a0\n\u2022 Not possible to rack the car, but on my back with a flashlight under all four sides showed nothing but clean. Noticed new brace bushings up front, probably part of the front suspension service. \n\u2022 Due to our time constraints - wife was with me - I did not drive it (although Antoine offered, except the car was deep in the middle of other cars) but that 5.3 sounds like an absolute beast.\u00a0\n\u2022 Whatever needed to be replaced, was, as part of the 20K in work done earlier this year. \n\u2022 Those upgraded 17\u201d wheels Tom mentioned would probably greatly improve the overall look/stance/presentation, althought the 16\u2019s most likely provide more cush, and the Avons are new at $700+ each. \n\u2022 Only 54 imported to the USA, even rarer as a 5-speed if I heard correctly. Even with the full size photos it seems to have a Japanese influence, the rear almost a Prelude. The front is a bit difficult to figure out with square lines hear and there and squarish headlight housings that just look wrong. The upper inlet looks like the AM moniker, but has been uncomfortable squeezed between the headlights along with the lower opening.\nOn the other hand the interior is fantastic. Love the brown piping and tan, and the instrument cluster is clean, functional and luxurious.\nThe engine bay looks clean as well and the cool air inlet design is similar to what is needed on the 67 blue and red vet. Stratos is right about the engine presence. Looks likes it ready to jump out and kick some serious butt.\nI agree with the wheels/tires. They just look thick. On some cars this works, like an XJ-S, but not this one.\nRegarding the red paint. For some reason it looks dull, almost like it wasn't giving a good shine. But the red MG behind looks the same so I think it has to do with the florescent lighting. Take this car outside and let the sun do it's thing.
