This is my second go at this. The first attempt this morning must have exceeded the quota and disappeared into the ether so here we go again! Barry, God bless you, the terminology is something I may have been guilty of at various points in the past, but I will try to ensure it does not happen in the future. \r\nTJM The car showed a mileage of 102,174 this afternoon. We do not use Kms, here nor does the US, so I have no idea how an auction house came up with a spurious figure of 60,000 Kms. TJM you are correct in your assertion that Jaguar only used California burl walnut. Unfortunately California burl walnut and intense California sun make unhappy bedfellows, and I suspect most, if not all Jaguar wood trim more than 60 years old will have been replaced or at least re-veneered. The straight grain veneered trinket tray and door cappings were done in California in or around 2015 looking at the invoices. I have owned countless XKs, Es and MkIIs over the past 35 years, and know from experience that going to a wood veneer wholesaler and searching through thousands of string-bound bundles of what appear to be dry tobacco leaves in a vain attempt to match what you have in mind is a fast road to insanity.\r\nThe previous US owner spent that money over a longer period, but clearly used the car very little. He did not re locate to the UK-the car did, bought by a national and international wind surf champion. He sold it to a dealer from whom I bought it. The work I had done turned it from a car with a number of issues, to one which has none that I am aware of. You could jump in and drive this car across the country, or in London traffic with confidence. It is not currently MOT'd as this is not a legal requirement for cars built before the late 60s (though I think it should be), but I will have this car MOT'd before it goes to its new owner.\r\nThe car is metallic mid/dark green. In my view, it looks wonderful, but these things are amatter of taste. It is almost the same colour as Jaguar\u2019s Sherwood Green of the late 90\u2019s but slightly less yellow. In the early 50s you could go along to Brown\u2019s Lane with a colour swatch of your choice, and Jaguar would paint your car that colour for, I believe, around 21 pounds. Metallics were available at that time (Ecurie Ecosse \u2018Flag Blue\u2019 for example) so the colour could be period correct in theory, though I am not saying for a moment that it left the factory green. This car was cream, and it was re-painted in the USA around 2005.\r\nXK120 SEs came with a twin exhaust; This one has a single stainless steel exhaust fitted in the USA before I bought it. Why? I don\u2019t know. It makes it quieter, so pleasanter on a long journey-less \u2018boy racer\u2019 on a short one. Having owned at least 7 XK120s (and probably 30 XKs of all models) I have experienced both options, and, for me, a single makes for a more pleasant long term companion. Either way, it\u2019s cheap and easy to change.\r\nNo XK 120s left the factory with three carbs. You are thinking of XK150Ss, either in 3.4 or 3.8 guises. No XK120 Drophead Coupes had leather cloth covered dashboards. You are confusing it with the roadster (Open Two Seater) which also had clip on side curtains , a rudimentary hood (top) designed never to go out in the rain, and cutaway doors. The drophead coupe and fixed head coupe were similarly lavishly equipped internally. The top is also (rather well) lined, so it has the feel of a saloon (sedan) top up. It is also fairly weather-proof . The SE was introduced in 1951 and the head has higher lift cams, shorter valves and tappet guides, optionally higher compression ratio, lightened flywheel etc etc. This became the standard engine for the XK140. The C type head (painted red, with a badge on each cam cover was introduced in April 1953.\r\nOldone 2 I am delighted to tell you that I do not \u2018live in a junk yard\u2019. In fact there are now new further photos online to re-assure you of that fact. Feel free to peruse the +\u201923\u2019 photos and see where the car lives and how things looked in my Dorset junkyard at midday today.\r\nThis car lives in a small gently rotating personal collection of around 10 classic Jaguar and Daimlers, and an errant \u201961 Corvette C1 in a luxurious barn next to our 300 year old restored farmhouse. Yes, you are correct, when one buys a classic car, or any high value item, one must be cautious. There is no grey area regarding the mileage of this car. I explained quite fully in my previous post that there is a slow but logical and consistent increase in the mileage to its current reading, going back to 2005. The auction house were mistaken in mentioning 60,000 Kms, pure and simple. Not for the first time, nor, I suspect, for the last. They also managed to transpose the chassis and engine numbers, and, on top of that, got the engine number wrong anyhow, changing the prefix 'S' into a 5! They did not cover themselves in glory on this occasion. \r\nIn terms of logic, if a low mileage is indeed an asset (a debatable topic in old cars), why would I now be quoting over 100,000 miles instead of their mistaken 60,000Kms (36,000 miles for those a bit vague about the nitty gritty of the calculation)? I also pointed out that this car shows distance travelled in miles on it\u2019s milometer, making their mistake even more absurd. Auctions are a matter of chance, as to whether the right people are there at the right time. I have, over the years, seen many fantastic cars fail to sell at auction, and some real dogs sell readily. The buying public are not always as wise as they should be, and certainly not always as well-informed. \r\nAs I also explained, this is now in a VERY different condition from when it appeared at auction, and that I purchased a little while later. One of the main issues was with the door hinges, which on a drophead or fixed head are of marginal design. This is due to the weight of the doors and window mechanisms. They had worn, partly seized and the doors had dropped badly, scraping against the sill on the driver\u2019s side, and hitting the B post on the passenger\u2019s. This is no simple fix, and entails quite major surgery and repair, which has now been carried out perfectly. They open close and align as they did at the factory. The car also had a number of other issues (too numerous to go into here) which have all now been professionally resolved.\r\nYes, you are correct in your observations that there are \u2018cloned\u2019 cars of all varieties out there and one must be careful. One of your fellow countrymen, a certain bogus doctor, was famous for creating more XK150 \u2018S\u2019 models than Jaguar ever did! \r\nThis car, I can assure you, is absolutely genuine. As I attempted to point out before, I am no \u2018fly by night\u2019 trader, which you seem to be implying. In fact I chaired the two technical seminars held at the recent massive XK70 celebrations held in the UK, and managed to persuade Norman Dewis, whom I have known for many years, to participate in the second one. If you don\u2019t know who he is, he was Jaguar chief development engineer from 1952 to 1985 and is a fantastic raconteur, even at 97. Feel free to look him up.\r\nI am also a friend of Michael Quinn, Sir William Lyon\u2019s grandson. If I were selling cloned or otherwise suspect cars, I would not be acting as a valuation consultant for the XK and E Type Clubs. I would also not have been invited by well-known Jaguar historian, Philip Porter, to share the driving of arguably the best-known E Type in the world, 9600 HP, (the final fixed head prototype, \u2018150 mph\u2019 road test car, and one of three 1961 Geneva launch cars) back down to Geneva to re-create the important role that this particular car played in the development and introduction of that iconic sports car. A rare honour indeed.\r\nIt is somewhat alien for people born and brought up on this side of The Pond to blow their own trumpet, but I mention the above purely to establish the provenance behind the sale of this car. While XKs are quite simple, robust and extremely usable classics, it beggars belief what has been done to some in the US in search of a quick buck. For the past 30 odd years I have imported many many XKs to Britain, and sometimes my mechanic is almost at the point of tears once he has done his initial inspection of the newest edition. Bodge ups and lash ups abound, and depending what it is, these can be difficult and expensive to put right. I am not talking about when creating a car for the concours arena, but simply to make it safe, reliable, usable and presentable. Murphyr2 you really do NOT want a car cobbled together by a bloke who's never seen an XK before, in a shed with a hammer. It will break your heart, and your wallet. Irrespective whether you bid further on my car or not, I would very strongly urge you to get someone who really knows their stuff to help you find a car if you have serious intent. I have a US business partner, based in SLC, who has been restoring XKs and Es since Christ was a lad, and also another fantastic knowledgeable and honest classic Jaguar restorer in Illinois. They offer their services to gentlemen such as you to find the right cars, and its REALLY worth it. You don't want a car that you cannot use with confidence-otherwise, it becomes simply a piece of art that sits in the garage quietly mouldering (and dripping!) Just send me an e mail directly, and I can help. \r\nTall folk:- For those of you quietly admiring the flowing and beautifully proportioned lines of the XK120, and picturing yourself driving off into the sunset in it, if you are much over 6', I would advise to think again. The 120 was penned in the 40's in a Britain where people were much smaller than they are now, and no one had had a square meal since the late '30s. With today's......umm....more extravagantly upholstered drivers, it can be a tight fit. However, do not despair, you tall fat folk. With surgery, you CAN fit a 120...that is on the car, not on you. I know the cost of medical treatment in the US-it's cheaper to do the car. Too involved to go into in detail here, and there is a cost implication, of course, but different, narrower (more comfortable) bucket seats can be installed which gives another 4\" of leg room, if the battery panel and stowage area behind the seats is relocated/deleted.
