At that time the odometer was at 2801 miles. Today, 8/5/2021, it reads 2950 miles. I will not drive the car again unless I\u2019m helping load it onto a truck or some such thing. Or if someone comes to see it during the auction I can start it and move it around my indoor storage area but we\u2019re not going out on the street. \n\nThe tripmeter was zeroed when I installed the new battery. It now reads 149.4 miles which reflects exactly how far I\u2019ve driven it. \n\nThe car has been asleep for a couple/few years (more on that later) so I replaced everything I could think of to make it like-new. \n\nI already explained the grille and why I got a new one. \n\nOne of the original wheel center caps had a small flaw. I was afraid if I just replaced 1 it might stand out for whatever reason. So I got 4 new oem caps. The old caps come with. \n\nThe original floor mat set in the car is like new. I saw that you could still get a new oem set so I got one. That set is in the trunk and comes with. \n\nThe pixel screen on the hvac controller (SAAB calls it the acc panel) was not working properly. I\u2019m told this is a common issue. A new acc panel is no longer available otherwise I would have bought one. From an outfit in The Netherlands I ordered a refurbished acc panel that has a new pixel screen and supposedly a better soldering job. My plan was to just swap the units and include the original with the car. Well. Surprise, surprise, the refurbed unit had a couple broken tabs and didn\u2019t look like new although it did have a new perfectly working pixel screen. Aargh. So I very carefully transplanted that pixel screen and gizmo that it\u2019s attached to over to my acc panel. I also transplanted the rubbery pads that give the buttons their \u201ccushion\u201d since the ones in my panel were literally like new. End result is the acc panel unit is now as new as the rest of the car.\n\nSince the car had not run in a few years I jumpered the fuel pump relay to pump the old fuel out of the tank. I did it at the fuel filter connection. Accessing the relay below the left side dash and intertwined with the ecu is cruel and unusual punishment I can tell you. I pumped out 12 gallons. I took a chance and poured it into my 99 VR6 Eurovan with 204k. It ran fine. I was very careful to put everything back under the dash exactly the way it was. \n\nInitially, the nice folks at Scanwest here in Seattle told me the car had 2 open recalls that never got done. Great, I thought. Now it can never go to Canada lol. Oh well! Imagine my surprise that not only did they have the parts in stock (ignition coil cassette and some sort of fuel pump connector) but they would perform the work at no charge to me. What???? She was driving her 1996 SAAB around the Maple Leaf/Green Lake neighborhood of Seattle. Vera (not her real name) was going about her usual business. One thing slightly out of the norm was the SRS/airbag warning light had been illuminated in her car for a couple days. Vera, being the diligent SAAB owner that she was, had consulted her owners manual and called the dealer as instructed the moment the light came on. As such she had a service appointment in a few days. \n\nA day or 2 before the appointment, while driving normally, Vera noticed a burning smell in her car accompanied by white smoke emanating from the dashboard. Before she knew what was happening, the passenger side airbag unleashed itself unprovoked with much explosive force. Vera pulled to the curb in shock, breathing in acrid smoke while looking at the world through a now spider-webbed windshield. Vera was perplexed as she had purchased her car new. It had no damage history and was always dealer serviced. \n\nThe car arrived at her local dealer, Carter SAAB, on the hook. They had it for a good while. This was a sticky situation as Vera had always been a VIP customer however her car was a few months past the warranty expiration date. Hmmm. What to do?\n\nWeeks then months passed with no concrete answers or resolution. Vera started considering legal representation. Finally it was determined that SAAB USA or North America or whoever was in charge at the time (GM?) would in fact cover the repairs at no charge to Vera.\n\nBy early 2000 her car was finally repaired. However. Vera, given time to reflect on the situation, decided she no longer wanted that vehicle as she didn\u2019t feel she could trust it. Back to the drawing board. \n\nAfter more time, it was mutually decided that Vera would pick out a new SAAB. She was to get a fair deal on her new car with a handsome trade-in allowance for her tainted 1996 model. Vera chose the most expensive SAAB in the 2001 lineup, a 9-3 Viggen convertible. Her dealer didn\u2019t have one so one was ordered. \n\nIn March 2001 the Viggen was in stock and the paperwork was ready. Vera went to the dealership to sign docs and take delivery. Nearing the end of the process there was one extra form that Vera was not familiar with. It was an NDA or \u201cnon disclosure agreement\u201d. Hmmm.\n\nEvidently someone from above didn\u2019t want Vera discussing her experience with anyone. Whether this mandate came from SAAB the company or the US distributor or heck General Motors it just isn\u2019t clear. If Vera wanted her new Viggen and this chapter in her life to be closed she had to sign this document. So she did. \n\nFrom that point forward Vera had a bad taste in her mouth about her new car. Just like that, whatever excitement she had in anticipation of driving around in SAAB\u2019s flagship was gone. As such she never got comfortable with the car. It was relegated to the carport essentially 24/7 in lieu of her Volvo. \n\nThe rare times she did drive her Viggen she noticed random folks asked her about it. Seattle has always had a \u201cthing\u201d for a SAAB. Due to the NDA she was uncomfortable chatting about the car. As a result of all these factors, 10 years later, in 2011, this Viggen had amassed 2801 miles.\n\nBy then Vera had also taken possession of her deceased fathers 1984 Chevy El Camino Cabellero. At some point in 2011 the Viggen and the El Camino got parked adjacent to one another in Vera\u2019s Seattle area carport. Vera never touched, drove or operated either car ever again. \n\nThrough Vera\u2019s neighbors (good friends of mine) I came along in Spring 2021. Both cars were perfectly/uniformly covered in a decade of dust. After several weeks of touch-and-go correspondence a deal was struck for both rigs. I thought something was wrong! As it turns out this is the 2001 SAAB version of a daytime running light (DRL) system. Basically every light that would be on if you had switched on the headlights is on. There are no dedicated DRL specific lights. Switching on the ignition key activates all the normal ones. \r\n\r\nI found out this system is easily defeated. You merely pull the 20 amp fuse from position 15. The fuse panel is on the far left of the dash and easily accessible with the driver side door open. \r\n\r\nIn this pic I\u2019m pointing at the removed yellow 20 amp DRL fuse in a spare position. Position 15 is the blank spot between the 2 green 30 amp units in the 2nd row down all the way right. Put fuse #15 back in it\u2019s home and this car is back to 100% original condition. \r\n\r\nWith the fuse pulled the headlight switch performs like an old car. You know like one from the 90\u2019s. \u201cOff\u201d truly means off. \r\n\r\nAnother SAAB peculiarity is their reverse lights. Good gawd the thing lights up like a Christmas tree front/rear in reverse. Sadly I only had my 9-3 Convertible for 3+ years (I'll spare the Saab story of why I had to sell it) but I can tell you it was a very fun 3 years. In my 34 years of driving manual trans cars, I can tell you there is nothing like 3rd gear in this car. It's range is mind-blowing. Tossing it around on winding and curvy roads it has the torch and range to keep the power to the wheels without hesitation or any turbo delay, and merging on to a highway, If I recall I'd get pretty close to 100 MPH before I had to hit 4th.\r\nSomeday I very much hope to have a 2001 9-3 Viggen convertible, but it will be one with more miles and a lower price. The top motors in this year Saab use the improved brackets so it doesn't torque & get bent out of shape so one shouldn't have any issues.\
