I currently own an e39 530d wagon (imported from Germany) and have previously owned an e32 735iL, an e34 530 sedan, and an e38 740iL (I seem to have a preference for golden-age BMWs).\r\n\r\nI negotiated directly with the owner in Japan and imported it in the spring of 2015. It had spent a decade in Japan with two owners. Fortunately, they had the service records going back to 2000. There was some difficulty in importing the vehicle because it had been registered in Japan in 1999. I contacted BMW Canada to get a letter confirming its build date. They passed me off to Denmark where it had been sold originally. I reached out to BMW Denmark and they provided the necessary paperwork. I've since found (thanks to Karl) that it was originally sold at a dealership in Hamburg. There was some speculation on the M5Board that the original owner was part of the Danish royal family, but I have been unable to confirm this.\r\n\r\nIn any case, after fixing up the major issues (EDC dampers, brakes, etc.), the car became my daily driver during the summers and the trip car for jaunts to the mountains. I've never tracked it or taken it out in the snow and it's been parked in my garage when not in use. I've only used full synthetic oil, and never revved it past 3k until the engine temperature had warmed sufficiently. \r\n\r\nIn 2015 it was in a minor accident and around that time the prices of Tourings began to spike. I couldn't stomach the thought of some teenager totaling it, so I picked up a diesel wagon as a daily driver, and saved the M5 for mountain trips and pleasure rides. I've not driven it a whole lot in the last 5 years, and have been slowly fixing all the little things in preparation to sell it.\r\n\r\nIn terms of repainting, the only panels that were painted were those directly affected by the fender bender: the hood, the bumper, and the left front fender. All the work was done by a certified BMW autobody shop (Modern Autobody) and they did fantastic work. In 2020, I had them repaint the roof rails and the door handles (which had faded somewhat). \r\n\r\nI was unable to source the original material when I resurfaced the roofliner. The original color was grey, but I decided that a contrasting color was preferable to an imperfect match. \r\n\r\nThe rear differential was beginning to make noise in 2015. I replaced it with a used diff from a 750iL to make the gearing more appropriate for North American speed limits. I traded some top speed for more torque.\r\n\r\nIn terms of service, there's a lot to list. I've never added it all up, but I'm sure it approaches $20 or $30K. I've only let two mechanics do work on it. A bmw specialist for the early work, and a good friend of mine who led the service department at the local BMW dealer (he also secured a very favourable rate). As to documentation, I'll be posting it in the next day or two - I just need to redact my personal information.\r\n\r\nThe car is not perfect, but it's been well-maintained by competent mechanics.
