He worked construction, drove it from Baltimore to DC for quite a few of those years, sweltering thru the summers without A/C. Despite the 35mpg highway it would get, the long commute would burn thru the 10 gallon tank every 3 days or so. It was my job to gas it up for him and keep it clean. Looking at the pictures, every nook and cranny from the storage area in front of the shifter to the bin between the passenger seat and door looks so familiar from the frequent vacuums I performed to remove the pipe ash and jobsite dust. Or a couple, I think his dad loved them. Anyhoo, he was driving an older yellow one, and Michigan winter roads being what they were in the early 80s, it rusted out quickly. Therefore, the engine was held in place by a hefty log chain. One of many minor \"mods\" that he and his dad used to keep these on the road for years.\r\n\r\nOur driveway was fairly long, and fairly steep and pretty narrow. In the winters it would ice up pretty good, what with me and the local kids using it as our sledding hill. Mom had a CJ5 (another BAT story) so she didn't care. Dad had the big town car and just parked at the bottom and walked. Anyway, Keith would come over in the little yellow honda and make a go for the top of the drive. About 2/3 up the lightweight bomber would lose traction and the tiny little wheels would start to spin, adding to the icing effect. At this point, most cars would be stopped, faced with the daunting challenge of backing all the way down the drive and threading the needle through the snow banks as they went. One wrong tire, and you were stuck there but good. Nothing but a LOT of shoveling would get you out.\r\n\r\nBut not the civic. Rev it up good, get her rolling backward, and spin the drivers wheel hard to one side. That thing would pivot around with one rear wheel staying completely in place. Due to the amazingly short wheelbase, the front bumper would just graze the snowbank as the car pirouetted gracefully a full 180 degrees to face back down the drive.\r\n\r\nBeing a high school kid, and wanting to impress my sis, he never parked at the bottom next to the Lincoln to walk, but instead tried again. And again. And again, until he made it to the top.\r\n\r\nGreat memories of these amazing little cars conquering what others couldn't, running far past the normal life span of any 70s ride basted with salt every day for half of the year, and impressing the 16 year old ladies.\r\n\r\nGood luck with the sale. All this so it could meet emissions and run on leaded fuel (no catalyst). (this is from memory - please correct me if I'm wrong). \r\n Good news is that the CVCC was very complex - with a rats nest of small vacuum tubes to control the emissions stuff, so the engine in this car would be simpler.\r\nI had a CVCC and it was wonderful and reliable even with all that complexity. The engine was sweet - spins like a sewing machine. Great gearbox, jewel-like interior pieces. \r\n They were very prone to rust, especially on the rear side of the front fenders. Badly enough that I believe I remember a recall? But this one looks great! People tend to confuse the two models just like some people think that every mid- to late-80s Civic Wagon is a Wagovan (the truth is very few of Civic Wagons were the Wagovan submodels. Wagovans were cheaper versions of the regular Civic Wagons and they sucked because the backs of the rear seats were stuck as nearly vertical to increase cargo capacity and they had horizontal bars to protect the side windows from cargo moving around back there. Basically, they were built to take advantage of some obscure Japanese rules for cargo capacity and someone at Honda decided to add them to the Civic Wagon range here in the US)\n\nBack to the car at auction: I owned a 1973 Civic like this with the 1238cc engine. I bought it in the late 1970s bought it as a sensible car (since my 1962 Austin Mini was not). It wasn't as sporting as the Mini, but it made up for things by being so damn well built and reliable. I still remember the very distinctive sound of the turn signal clicking noise. You moved the turn signal lever and there was sort of a stutter click at first, then it settled down into regular clicks. This car brings back so many good memories. I loved my Civic, but had to sell it due to low finances in college. They drove it for 2 more years and then gave it back. I then sold it for $300, to a customer (I now worked as a mechanic) needing a car with good gas mileage as gas had rocketed to more than $1.50 a gallon! He drove it for 2 years and then gave it back to me after it \"broke down\". Turns out the nut holding the ball joint to the spindle had backed off and fallen out. Re positioned the ball joint into the spindle and replaced the nut and it was driving again. Mind you, during all this time the only repair ever done was an alternator along with fluids and a set of used tires. I decided it has to be time to retire the Civic, so I simply floored the gas pedal but after a couple minutes, nothing? Next I repeatedly side stepped the clutch with the gas pedal floored, again besides many smokey burnouts , nothing broke?
