As it was relayed to me, they loaded up the US cars with all the goodies which overloaded the original design electrics. I have owned 6 Alfas, 5 Lancias, and many other European brands over my driving lifespan so this car was not a scary endeavor for me. I have driven the car on many 100 mile plus weekend outings and used it daily off and on during the nice weather here in the NW. The car is a true grand touring sedan with incredible performance and a nice ride, the cockpit is actually very quiet on the freeway, as mentioned in the brochure \"the first production car to use a new German sound insulation system, eliminating resonance in the body shell\". The dogleg gearbox is great fun combined with the limited slip diff and the performance was pretty impressive for 1989; 0-60mph in 6 seconds and top speed of 150mph. I have found the car's mechanicals to be pretty robust aside from the little gremlin that may appear now and then. For a 30 year old car it drives very modern. If you search around you should be able to find a mechanic whom is willing to work on these in most major metropolitan areas. Parts availability is well supported stateside right here in the NW by MIE who has most all parts in stock at all times and are very helpful and knowledgable when you call them on the phone. Prices are typical of other European counterparts. The fusebox was a weak spot for these cars and this one had it replaced. The rear seat room is very accommodating, more leg room than a BMW 5 series or Alfa 164. These later cars have factory rustproofing and did not suffer like the early cars, I have not seen rust issues on 1987 and later Maseratis. We are lucky here in the NW as our environment, although wet, is not very salt infused. Maintenance makes a lot of difference to the life of a Maserati of the 80's!\r\n\r\nI'm the happy owner of a 2.24v made in 1989 (it's a 2 doors coupe with the 2000 cc 4 valve per cylinder engine) that I take car of personally, so over time I've come to know these well. These cars, when properly maintained, deserve to have their reputation reviewed for the better. Most Issues were rooted in the bad decision to launch the early Biturbos with a carburator engine. This led the chief Engine designer to resign in desperation, but Alejandro de Tomaso was not a man that listened to his engineers - unfortunately. Once Maserati switched to injection, pretty much all engine issues were solved. I can speak for my 4 valves only, but even by today's standard, these are great. They are very reliable as long as proper oil is used, they are not shut off immediately after hard driving, and, most important, timing belt and water pump are serviced properly. The last owner learned it the hard way unfortunately. These engines are know for burning no oil at all. They are a masterpiece IMO.\r\n\r\nYes, the fuse box is poorly designed and there's nothing (so far) that can be done about it. Another cause of concern is relays and fuses under the hood. Fabio Collina of Maserati scanned in high resolution for me. I can't thank him enough.\r\nNow, back to the fuse box: the Maserati Fuse Box in all Biturbos are derived from Fiat models of that era. All of the harness between the engine bay and the cockpit is routed through the box, which is made of a foldable, multi layer circuit board. Commonly, to give them new life, they are opened up, and all solder joints are touched up with a bit of new solder, with some care.\r\nThere is, that I know of, no after market new harness or remade fuse box. I'm working on a total redesign of the fuse box PCB but this is not the place to discuss it.\r\nSome other issues may arise from the wires that run in the middle of the engine's V - they are subject to heat and vibration. In the long term they should be inspected and protected with heat shrinking sleeve rather than replaced IMO.\r\n\r\nRegarding this specific car, it's really very nice and is also getting some favorable comments on the Italian Maserati enthusiasts forum. The colour on the head covers is the wrinkled red paint like it should.\r\n \r\nThe three relays/fuses on picture 86 (right size of the picture) are aligned whereas the 8 relays/fuses in the same picture are not - probably the interlocking pins of the plastic holders for these relays are gone (they are easily broken), but are also very easily and cheaply found and changed if necessary.\r\n\r\nSome of the most common issues in these cars have been fixed too, I see: steering bushing, and new clutch cylinder/slave and pivot (I guess you call pivot the leverage which is pushed y the slave and bears all the load of pushing the friction discs). So I owned a 1986 425 back in ~1998-2000. Maroon with pumpkin interior. The previous owner had changed the carb/plenum chamber to one from an 84 and re-jetted it. He also added a sparco air-air intercooler (Which I took on and off a few times and could never tell if it added any power). It had no cats - just straight pipes to an ANSA exhaust with 4 tips. It also had hood scoops. It was fast and loud (by my standards at the time). \r\n\r\nMy father and I flew to CT to purchase it and drove it home 500 miles (it died less than a mile from our home due to a shattered distributor cap.) I spent lots of time tinkering with it. I never did get the gas guage to work just filled it up every 90 miles. There were electical issues, my fuse box had several that had overheated and were re-wired. My 425 eventually blew a head gasket and my uncle rebuilt it. By the time it was fixed I had a VW Jetta TDI that was uber reliable, but didn't have the passion that the Italian car did. Richard Hammond commented that he loved the car. \nI can only add that to drive the 430 is a true joy, the car is quiet at highway speed but sends out exciting turbo whistle and a fun growl under acceleration. At idle the exhaust tone is nice and deep. The steering is not overly boosted. The brakes and clutch have good feel, they are not too light as in some cars of this era. The dogleg shifting is a hoot, easy to get used to. The suspension is on the soft side so it does squat under acceleration a bit but its no mushy slug. The power band is very linear, no big Turbo lag as in a Saab 900 SPG that I used to own (still a fun car though). The engine pulls very strong and is extremely smooth, it is a great engine design in my opinion. The car overall is more on the luxury side of driving than say a E28 5 series but is way more entertaining under acceleration. You do have to be careful in the wet as these are pretty light cars and can get tail happy. The overall ownership experience is not as bad as you would expect as long as you have some mechanical knowledge and also know who to call when you need parts and service needs but is no more expensive than a similar BMW/Saab/Mercedes/Audi. The real beauty is the interior detailing and quality and the rarity as not too many left on the roads any more. Most of the BiTurbos suffered from lack of proper maintenance and neglect from owners that shouldn't have owned them in the first place.
