I saw one on the road and thought, wow that's a bold, fun, look. Shortly after then my Peugeot 505 Turbo started showing its age, and I found myself at a Subaru dealer. Drove a 2.5RS, loved it, very crisp handling and of course that amazing sense of trust that Subarus seem to instill when one slips behind the wheel. I ended up with a Legacy GT 5spd but always wished I had gone with the Impreza. A few years later I did just that and bought a 2005 STi. \n\n@eagsfan99 I'm not so sure that this was the last good Subie. Those GD Imprezas were very nimble and not really much bigger than this car. And the turbo Legacy GTs were really sweet too. Subarus got bloated, I agree, but there were a few good generations after this one.\n\nAs to rust -- I'm in the northeast so I don't see any of these that are not rusty, and more often than not they're banged up too. \n\nThis car is a time machine. The auto is really not that bad of a gearbox. The active center diff on the automatics is a pretty nice piece of engineering. And the 2.5RS came with a rear LSD too! It's hard to beat these cars for their combination of practicality, utility, and fun. \n\nThis car is clean enough to make a 5spd swap seem like an attractive option. That would bring with the 50/50 split viscous center diff -- a bit less dynamic than the one in this car but a more rearward bias in daily driving. One could always go whole hog and swap in an STi drivetrain as well! Then the scoot would really back up the looks.\n\nIn the meantime this is a great car, and fantastic survivor, just as it sits. As someone who has owned 3x coupes and 1 sedan, I much prefer the sedan. Yes, the coupes look nicer, but the doors are longer which can be annoying in parking situations, and the panels behind the doors/below the rear windows are extremely fragile. I used to keep spares in my garage after having friends mess them up getting in/out of the cars. Another plus with the 4-door is that it's really nice to put down all 4 windows, open the sunroof, and cruise down the road on a warm day. I got to drive it again recently and WOW I miss it so much. If only I did not need to sell it. All running gear was from a 2007 STI, 480 ft lbs of torque in a 2800 pound car is fun. My forester has 63k on it with all running gear from a 2005 STI and 400+ HP to the wheels. My daily is an stock bugeye wrx with 150K on it. I've owned 12 subarus from stock to 750 horsepower. That all being said, I would never touch this one, it would remain stock and would be enjoyed. I should consider myself lucky that it is on the East coast. You can remove the vent pieces under the hood and have way more air escaping if you would like. 165hp doesn't feel slow to me at all! Trans shifts so quickly! I read an article that suggested removing the sealer gob which is excess on the inside and spraying it yearly or more often with WD40. The theory I suppose is that the wd40 will penetrate into the joint and coat all the metal preventing rust and the sealer would still be filling the actual small gap it is supposed to fill. Sounded good to me. In the old days I had a neighbor who coated his under carriage of his car and dumped oil into the bottom of the doors and rockers every fall. He used his used motor oil. This car is easily as nice looking as that one was nearly 13 years ago, with almost 20k less miles. I think this car should go for somewhere around $10k-$12k but we will just have to wait and see. \r\n\r\nOver here in Sweden, these cars rust out in the rear because of the rocks and gravel on the roads in winter time that basically \"sandblast\" the inner fenders all winter long. Of the four I owned in CA, not one of them had any rust underneath. Just depends on what the cars are subjected to. My last one - a 2000 2.5RS 5spd sedan - lived with me out on the CA coast and had a couple nicks and scratches that showed concern, but nothing really bad, and no body rot. One area that is important to check on a regular basis on the sedans especially is the window rubber in the rear corner of the back doors because it has metal inside of it, and if that starts to rust - it will expand and drool rust down in the door jambs. It's especially important because that is one rubber piece that goes all the way up to the front corner of the front door windows, and it also forms the center pillar on the external area between the windows. One thing that the newer model improved on, but doesn't take away from how awesome these cars are.\r\n\r\nI just missed out on a '99 WRX over here - a true GC8, rally blue sedan, and it sold for 44k SEK (about $5,500) before I even saw the ad. Still sore from kicking myself... \r\n\r\nI think that this car should last a good long time - just needs to have the underside checked out periodically and any issues addressed.
