It has 7-speeds and is the most developed of the 3 systems.\n\n I'm not going to lie, they are controversial. I think the biggest issue lies in the fact that BMW salesman sold them like an automatic, it's NOT an automatic (although you can run it in Auto mode). If your expecting it to shift where you can't feel it, its going to not meet you expectation. If you want it to feel like a manual and crack off amazingly fast shifts, it will light your fire. I have driven both the 6-speed and SMG versions and even as die hard 3-pedal guy, I think the car was developed to be an SMG, its just more harmonious with the car as a whole, but again its controversial and people line up on both sides. \n\nIt's a manual transmission that has hydraulically actuated clutch with computer controls. Once you understand that you will appreciate that it shifts like a manual transmission car, except you aren't operating the clutch or moving the shift lever. So you will feel it pause, release the clutch, shift, engage the clutch and proceed. The speed at which it does this in controlled via a setting on the console from slow to race fast. It also shifts faster the higher the RPM and the wider the throttle opening. You can shift it with your foot to the floor if you like but it operates smoothest if you lift slightly in conjunction with shifting with the paddles. The photos for this listing were taken and the first very short driving video above shows no warning, these were taken within minutes of each other the day I sent this listing to BAT. I believe the warning triangle shown is either for door ajar (as I was taking photos thru the open drivers door or the fact that it was in neutral with no parking brake set (you will see the red BRAKE light is not illuminated). The 2nd longer driving video shows me going thru the check control and there are no system warnings. Rear brakes were done at the dealer at 52k miles. On a BMW they always do pads/rotors together (as you call a \u201cfull\u201d brake job) as BMW doesn\u2019t allow machining rotors or just installing pads for dealers. In my opinion there are two reasons brake life seems to be shorter on BMW: the Condition Based System (CBS) seems to indicate for brakes earlier than my old fashioned physical inspection or even the brake pad sensors seem to. Most I have seen will indicate it\u2019s due in the CBS and yet a physical inspection indicates 30-40% pad left. On my last E90 M3, same story and I drove another 20k miles before the actual pad sensor was showing. Since you have to replace the rotors anyway no harm in going to the final 10-15%. If anything a DCT swap would be the move to make in one of these.
