I have a 69 FHC and think they are the prettiest and best cars to drive. Jaguar fixed all the issues with these cars and you can drive them anywhere with confidence. They are comfortable and don't over heat. I love the 3.54 rear end which is perfect for every day driving and especially in the countryside and Hwy 1. IMO The 3.07 is too tall for anything but freeway driving. I also have the triple SU set up which gives the car 265 BHP of grunt and as much torque as you need. If I didn't already own one I'd be really interested in this car. I spent 10 years researching upgrades and opinions from fellow E type owners and forums while spending 6 years restoring mine. Do keep in mind that there are several different views on what \"restoration\" means. First, let me say to each his own and I am not trying to change any ones mind on experiences they have had. That said, The proper Jag tri carb setup costs between $3000 and $6000 to convert from the stromies on series 2 cars. Depends on how much of the work you do yourself, but the carbs and manifold aren't cheap. The way God would have wanted it would be properly set up triple 45DCOE Webers breathing through the alloy crossflow dual overhead HEMI head! Yes, Jaguar won Lemans 3 times with this basic engine before Chrysler ever put a HEMI in a car. Removing the secondary butterflies from the dual stromberg secondary intake, and plugging the holes(federal changes in 69), the stromberg setup will yield very near the horsepower of the triples. Probably less than 10 HP difference. Modifiying the intake is about $5000 dollars cheaper. For the money, give me the stromies or the webers.\nI retained the 4 speed gearbox and changed the rear Dana gear from the 3.54:1 to 3.07:1 for less than $500. New gears, shaft, seals, shims, everything. 5 speed transmission is around $5000 for parts. My car will still spin the tires with the posi rear, and chirp the tires in second. Plenty for me. The 2.88:1 would take this away, but be an unmatched cruise gear for these smooth, very nice riding cars on the highway, were most driving is done nowadays. You choose, it's your car, I'm just doing price checks on the upgrades mentioned. I agree the lights on the federal mandated series 2 cars suffered greatly. I removed the side reflectors and changed the rear lights to suit myself (easily reversable). This comment just identified me in the Etype circles as pictures of my car have been posted on the internet on several Jag forums. My experience with anyone knowing the difference of a series 1,2 or 3 are just in the car enthusiast realm. I get the same thumbs up, cool car, beautiful, etc as the series 1 cars from the general public and I can adjust my seats, stop better, run cool, etc because of the series 2 upgrades from the factory. I hope this car goes for big bucks. I will be selling mine soon because of another interest and if this one brings the bucks, mine will follow in a few months. On the series 2 American market they did the weirdest thing on the distributor. In stead of advancing the timing as the RPM rises, they retard it. All of the advice I have had recommended getting rid of the original distributor, and replacing it with either a Malory or a Pertronix. I personally prefer the Pertronix, as it is completely self contained and pre-set for the Jag 4.2 and reasonably priced at around $250.\r\nIt makes a huge difference to the performance whether you go with the removal of the secondary throttle or go for triple SUs.\r\nThe worst part of the original set up is two fold. The wear on the driver's seat says most likely many, many more miles than 1000, at least since the interior was redone, leaving me to believe the car was refurbished ( no where near restored) in different areas at different dates over the 13 years to now.\n\nMy biggest concern about this car is that in the pictures on XKEDATA (link I provided) shows a picture of the boot (trunk) area which has \"light blue\" paint. It is nowhere near the silver of the exterior and is most likely the original color of the bodyshell of this car. Why would you paint the boot a different color than the original color? This car also has heated rear defrosted window that is not even mentioned in the description (which may or may not work) and was an option on this year E-type. Another option, though not working as per the sellers explaination is the A/C. According to Haggerty price guides, the A/C adds 10% of value over overall price to the car. The only other option on the series 2 I can think of is power steering, which is not needed on these cars, in my opinion. Another plus with this car is the tool roll, manuals, and the jack, all very expensive items to source these days. All can be repaired and these systems in good working order do very well in the coupes( and probably in the open two seaters). When most cars need a part, they aquire a good used part and rebuild the car using as many original numbers matching parts as possible. A car from Conn. could have lots of rust and in Texas, a non running car may have a perfect body. Nothing wrong in my opinion using the best you can get and build a nice solid car. Bonnets were swapped on these cars many times due to damage in accidents. There is a body number tag tack welded to the body shell under the stainless panel that runs across the rear end. This number is on the Heritage certificate. If it were removed and replaced you could probably tell. Most people would not bother to change it during a body swap. A picture of this tag could just prove me wrong on my assumptions.\n\nThere is also a mention of a new battery tray, this could lead to a can of rust worms being released under the tray, through the front closing panel and into the drivers rocker. Ask me how I know! I ended up replacing the above mentioned panels because of a leaking battery for lots of years. I now use an Optima battery. If I were bidding on this or any E-type, I would want pictures of this area, the front floorpans( with carpet pulled away, and under the heater box. There is already a picture of the boot floor on the link pages and it looks good. These are some of the rust prone areas that you can see on the cars. The ones you can't see are inside the front engine subframe assemblies. You can inspect these from underneath the car for rust through and cracks. The frames are a special metal and cannot be welded. New ones are availabe though.\n\nMcorrallo, suck it up, you and ebrand asked for it and the things I have mentioned are all true. Prove me wrong. (the AC did not work at the time I owned the car, and I never needed it either) I bought the triple SU set up and it was in very very nice condition, but never got the chance to put it on. It ran strong with the zeniths. The car comes with it's original owner stamped aluminum data service plate (protecto plate as it is sometimes referred to, which is rare) and many many documents regarding the restoration by the owner previous to me. The whole drivetrain was gone through and rebuilt/refurbished and looked very nice from underneath. The driver seat wrinkling that was mentioned has always been there when I bought it....I was told by a Jag E-Type collector and restorer that there is a trick to getting the seat seaming pulled down onto the frame correctly to prevent this. I am sure not a huge deal for an upholstery shop...never bothered me enough to get to it. It never overheated, always ran cool, radio did not work at the time, but I much preferred the music of the 4.2liter to any radio station. Transmission shifted smoothly and clutch take up was predictable. Brakes were good w/o any shuddering or odd noises. I do know the speedo was changed by the previous owner, but being that everything in the driveline was redone, this did not bother me with regards to any odometer reading. The receipts spell out the work done to the car and there is quite a pile as I remember. I very much enjoyed the car and feel the series II, although sometimes much maligned by purists, is the easiest to own, drive and maintain. I am sure there is more, but really people interested in this piece of history should turn their questions to the seller as my tenure was a few years back......as I always do when interested in a new adventure, ask for as many pictures, ask as many questions and specifics to make you confident about your bid. You're always going to be at the whim of somebody else. However, if you are inclined to \"tinker\", there are ample resources and people to help you (forums being number one). Most people I know (myself included) derive satisfaction from working on the cars.\n\nSU's are a \"variable choke\" carb and are fundamentally different than fixed chokes (weber, edelbrock, holley, carter etc etc). However, they are relatively easy to tune if you work through them in a systematic way. They have far less variables than fixed chokes. The key to any multiple carb car is to sync them first. Without this, you will NEVER succeed. Even on Webers, people who complain about \"spitting\" are missing the point. It's not necessarily the carb tune. It's more likely that the carbs aren't sync'd. It's like painting...success is created in the preparation.\n\nOn SU's once you've sync'd the carbs (easy job), you really only have one jet to deal with One
