The original Studebaker Avanti was the company's last-gasp attempt at survival. It might have worked and was well-received at the time, if only they had been able to make enough of them. Growing up in the 60's, I remember seeing one go down the street. I chased after it, pedaling my Schwinn 'Blueberry Crate' Stingray bike as furiously as I could, just to see what this spaceship was that just landed on the streets of my little hometown in upstate New York. I could just make out the name 'Avanti' as it pulled away from the next light. I reverently whispered the name to myself, and didn't know what the hell I just saw was.\n\nWhile it's not an 'original' Studebaker-built Avanti (the company went belly-up in the 60's), it's great that the brilliance of Raymond Loewy's design was recognized and resulted in the continuation of the model. I have a 1980, my wife wanted one after she saw Dick Van Dyke's white Studebaker version at the Peterson.\r\n\r\nMine is still the 350, and although it had that lousy box catalytic and faux/sorta kinda dual exhaust, the car gets up and goes smartly. Pretty much like the same-year Corvette, which is what the drivetrain that year was. I cannot attest to the 305 as I never drove one. But keep in mind, the originals (Studebaker) were more of a lusty performance car (especially the supercharged R2 models), although never an all-out sports car, the IIs are like GTs and just grand cruisers.\r\n\r\nThe use of aircraft style lighting in the \"cabin\", great switchgear, leather everywhere, and a very comfortable ride make these quite interesting cars indeed.\r\n\r\nWe will never sell ours. This spring we are reconditioning--dumping that lousy exhaust system, new brakes, AC charge. We have done very little since owning it since 1996--master cylinder, belts, battery and a few small items. Parts are still available. I love these cars but the 305 HO had 175 anemic horsepower and in a heavy car it was a fun but not spirited driver. The 350 is a far superior engine but no one has a later model Avanti with any real intention of winning a stop light grand prix. The interiors are beautiful and I like the lines. These cars are either love 'em or hate 'em cars. I love 'em.\n\nMy 85 model was one of the last made by the owner of the company at the time and had a GM drive train with ford steering box that was also sourced on a fork lift. The body lines in the classic Studebaker are clearly more elegant. Just changing the front end a couple of inches to accommodate the Chev engine takes something special away from the beauty of the original design. But, given what an Avanti sells for, and what a nicely presented car like this will cost, it\u2019s not a lot to give up if you enjoy the car as a whole.\r\n\r\nIn regards to discussions about the Studebaker chassis, it is a 50\u2019s design that needs work to make it a pleasure. There are parts available to improve the steering, upgrade the bushings, upgrade the brakes and so on. I would recommend all of them. I am just in the early stages of making these improvements. I expect it to improve the handling of the car immensely. I would HIGHLY recommend it for the high bidder on this auction.\r\n\r\nTo get a sense of prices, with the classic Avanti vs the Avanti II, here is how the classic cars usually price out:\r\n1.\tAn R3 will likely never show up for sale and expect to pay north of $100k for the car.\r\n2.\tAn R2 will be $30k to $50k depending on the condition and whether is an automatic or standard (the latter being adding another $6 to $10k to the price\r\n3.\tA respectable R1 will sell for $15 to $30k depending on the condition. \r\n\r\nI have been surprised how few beautifully done Avanti\u2019s show up for sale. Most have tired chrome and tired interiors. I expect that the current (relatively low) values have not been enough of an inducement to the owners to do a high-grade restoration. \r\n\r\nIn regards to this car, it looks in great shape (in the whole scheme of things). The interior looks good, the body looks good, and I would concur with many of the other postings about upgrading to a more modern SBC (but only after doing the chassis upgrades). If this goes in the range of $15k, then I think that it should be considered what the classic car trade calls \u201cwell bought\u201d. Another plus on this sale is that the selling dealer has an excellent reputation (based on a couple of the comments) which is an added plus. One more positive (IMHO) is that it was an estate sale from someone who loved his car enough to keep it to the \"end\".
