Having been raised around British cars, I was more than a bit wary. None of the gauges worked, save the tach. The body and interior were fine, but there was just a nagging feeling that this car should not enter the family, as I knew I would be the lead mechanic. Well, the ex wanted it, of course, but not for her sister, for us! I took her for the test drive on a gorgeous, fall Bay Area day with the top down.....and that sold her. We got it as my protests fell on deaf ears. Promising myself to get the gauges working, two weeks later, driving it to Oakland, the water pump went out.....and of course, who knew? So, one fried engine. I sourced another, went through it and installed it, ALONG with getting all of the gauges working. As usual, the barn door was closed just a bit too late. Then, the winter came with a wet rush and damn if that car didn't leak at every conceivable spot. You couldn't drive 10 miles without getting soaked. It would have been better to simply leave the top down; at least that way, you KNEW you were going to get wet. Once all of the issues were sorted and it was safe to drive in any moisture, I was washing it (yes, had to be careful prior) and a neighbor came over and asked if it were for sale. I said no, but made the mistake of mentioning it to my ex. She, of course, now had a change of heart since the bank account had dipped a bit, demanding that I go the neighbors house and hammer out a deal. Which I did. Part of me wanted to see it go while I knew I really wanted to keep it. So, in the end, both the car and the wife are gone, but at least I can contemplate another Midget. I like this one, although I have never been a fan of the rubber baby bumpers. You never know. GLWTS.....I'll be watching. The best thing? Needless to say, I was soaked by the end of the process. I don't know if the new pictures show it very well but the area under the seats appears to have been undercoated at some point. Big Healeys and MGAs have pulled the market upwards. That, in turn, has pushed the Bugeye Sprite prices north of the 10k barrier even for driver level cars. The Bugeyes, in turn, have pulled up the prices of the '60s Spridgets. Eventually, those same market forces will start tugging on the rubber bumpered Midgets and MGBs, but for now, enjoy them while they still are fairly reasonable. You can find running examples that need work for shockingly low prices, and even great examples like this one should still stay relatively reasonable. It will be interesting to see where this one pans out.\n\nAny Spridget is a ridiculously fun car to drive. Even with the top up, it's still a fun experience. You lose some of that \"perception of speed\" that the British Cars are famous for -- feeling like you're flying when you're only doing 35, but still plenty of sensations to make it fun. And, of course, the top down experience is just amazing, especially on a warm night. These little cars are instant icebreakers. I thought I'd give a little information about my history with the car - which granted is minimal - but it may help generate some comments and some more bidding!!! (thank you to those who have placed bids ;-))\n\nI found the car about 2 miles from my house parked at the end of a driveway. There was no \"for sale\" sign so I just kept driving past until the day that I saw people outside. I stopped and asked if the Midget was for sale and they said \"why yes it is\". Apparently, they had it on Craigslist but didn't bother to put a sign in the window??? They also didn't bother to clean it up. I looked the car over and the one thing that impressed me was the condition of the body and the interior. It wasn't perfect but for a 1979 vehicle it was pretty darn good. The battery was dead so we jumped it and it started right up. I took it for a short test drive with the top down and I was hooked! A few days later I showed up with cash and the deal was done. The gentleman who was selling it was older and said that he and his wife could no longer get in and out of the car and that is why he was selling it.\n\nOnce I got it home and gave it a bath I started to look at what would make it a better car. The engine ran well and the transmission shifted great but the ride was soft and \"squishy\" (how's that for a technical term!). I also noticed that the driver seat was soft and I felt like I fell to the floor when sitting in the car. So, 4 new (rebuilt) shocks, new lowered front springs, new seat webbing and new seat cushions and those issues were resolved. \n\nI figured the car hadn't been serviced in some time so fresh oil, oil filter, new air cleaner element, fuel filter, transmission and differential fluid and a new breather. The car certainly felt happier. I didn't know the condition of the bearings or brakes so I replaced the front and rear bearings, checked the front brakes, installed braided lines and replaced the rear shoes and brake cylinders.\n\nI made the mistake of removing the wheel trim rings and ended up scratching the wheels. That just wouldn't do, plus the tires were old and needed to be replaced. So, old tires off, media blast the wheels, paint, new tires, balance and life is good! The tie rods ends were shot so I replaced them and had the car aligned. It now drives straight and true - perfect!\n\nNext, I had to do something about the seat and decided to do both while I was at it. New webbing and cushions did the trick. While the seats were out I noticed that the carpeting didn't look great - so I replaced it and installed a leather covered center console with a storage compartment and cup holder - can't go with out coffee on the way to the weekly car club breakfast!\n\nSo, is the car perfect? No it isn't but it is an honest, solid driver that needs little. Why am I selling after such a short period of ownership? My fraternity brother in college had one in British Racing Green. The dark shade of paint, the black bumpers and trim seemed to compliment each other. Also the car seemed to be indestructible. Four 180+lbs guys in/on the car multiple occasions. Check. Zero maintenance. Check. Out in the elements through Missouri winter. Check. Drunkenly driven like a bat out of hell at least once a week. Check.\n\nI was told this story second hand, but I believe it. Leaving a bar one night, the owner jumped a curb, ousting the passenger with the Midget coming to rest on its side with all 4 wheels in the air. The passenger had a small scrape, but the car was easily righted and driven home with no visible harm.
