For the Blue Oval, whose lineup still mostly consisted of big boulevard cruisers and land yachts (even their midsize offerings, like all the Big Three's models, were YUGE). Anyway, consider the following: \r\n\r\n-- In 1974, the year the II debuted (and without an available V8 in the lineup), Ford sold nearly 419,000 Mustang IIs in all the various body styles and types. I think Motor Trend magazine even named it their Car of the Year for 1974. \r\n\r\n-- Over the car's five-year-long model run -- before Ford brought back the Mustang with the 1979 Fox body version -- the Blue Oval sold more than 1.1 million Mustang IIs.\r\n\r\n-- The II was a Top Ten seller among all cars in four of the five years Ford offered it. It was no sales slouch, except for maybe in the last model year, but even that is a relative thing, especially when compared to today's hyper-segmented automobile market.\r\n\r\nThe V8 returned in 1975, and the '75 Ghia (Ford had bought the Italian design studio precisely so it could project an aura of European luxury onto various of its car offerings) with the cabriolet or half-vinyl top and the opera windows behind the 'B' pillars along the roof was definitely the \"personal luxury small car\" in the model's lineup. \r\n\r\nNOTE: \"Personal luxury\" back then was also a relative term. I inherited my brother's 77 (I think). He blew the motor and we spent a summer rebuilding the engine...worked into the party scene at their place (oh the stories there). Anyway, true dual exhaust, upgraded the ignition to what we could and a big holley 2 barrel, it was a lot of fun. Sounded great and would dust a 944 in the day. One cool thing I remember about it...I would be at the base of the driveway to my Mom's...it had a pretty decent slope. I would let the clutch out slowly with no gas and the car would idle up the driveway. Always amused me. The sleeper potential of this is indeed high. May just have to do it one day. Wish it would be now, but gotta miss this beauty.
