The warm Honduras red is still there.\r\n\r\nThe molded wood part making the vertical head rest support column probably flares out offering the shape and support for the head rest cushion and upholstery all in a single laminated and molded piece, made to finished shape using jigs and router templates in the day. \r\n\r\nThe vertical adjustment \"gear teeth\" would be done by chucking the finished, resin hardened, wood assemblage onto the bed of a large overhead mill and making repeated passes with the appropriately sized HSS end mill at very high rpms. The reason the serrations/gear teeth are so large is that it is only resin reinforced wood and the load must be spread out to prevent excessive wear. It is a very interesting adaptation and use of materials and techniques for such an application.\r\n\r\nThe steering wheel appears to be micro-laminated wood as well, probably of the same material as the core laminations of the head restraint supports. I speculate both steering wheel and head restraint supports were fabricated in the same facility.\r\n\r\nJust some wild guessing from an old woodworker.\r\n\r\nI have always loved these Montreal beauties. They are out of my league now. I remember when I could have afforded a used one. I never had a heated garage to put one in. Sigh. They deserve nothing less.\r\n\r\nWhat a great driving video. When everything is working properly, it will not backfire.\r\n\r\nThis can be caused by the fuel cut-off switch not working properly. It is not uncommon that the fuel cut off switch fails; it is located on the bottom of the SPICA pump logic body. Reproduction switches were available some time ago (I have one - installed!) \r\n\r\nThe wiring from the switch goes to the horizontally-mounted fuel cut-off solenoid. They do not fail as frequently. But they can be out of adjustment.\r\n\r\nThe disconnected red wire in your recent photos appears to be the power signal to the cold start solenoid. Was it disconnected prior to removal of the plenum? Was it reconnected prior to replacement of the plenum? As a former Montreal owner I have to jump in and say first what great cars these are to drive when sorted. The engine sounds healthy, so that\u2019s a good thing!\r\nA few things I\u2019m surprised no one has mentioned yet:\r\nFirst, The little chrome \u201cbanana\u201d trim that goes above the front bumper framing the mouth of the grill is missing on both sides and nearly impossible to source, but thankfully it\u2019s not that noticeable. \r\nSecond, the bubbling in the paint behind the passenger door is something to be concerned about. It\u2019s a common rust spot on Montreals due to water entering Inside the body from the horizontal slats in the C pillar. Water lingers and pools there causing rust. So to see bubbling on the outside of the paint could indicate the metal is completely rusted through in that spot, and it\u2019s a very difficult repair to do properly. The car looks like it has a number of areas that will require metalwork.\r\nThe ZF gearbox in the Montreal is one of the finest transmissions I have ever experienced. I believe it was also shared with the fiat Dino 2400. It should not crunch. It should work like a well oiled rifle bolt, and is not susceptible to \u201dtypical\u201d Alfa synchro issues like in other 105 cars with Alfa-made gearboxes . The next owner will definitely need to address this as it\u2019s not a \u201cpar for the course\u201d aspect of a Montreal. \r\nThese cars are utterly fantastic and like nothing on the road, but I implore anyone bidding who doesn\u2019t have unlimited money to be clear eyed about the very high expense involved in body work and mechanical work on these cars, as well as the extreme difficulty of obtaining spare or repro parts.
