I first saw this car exhibited at the final Concours d\u2019Elegance of America in 2021 and was impressed with the car so when the seller contacted me wanting to sell it we took the car on without hesitation. \r\n\r\nI\u2019m not thrilled with the undercarriage shots here, there was too much light and there\u2019s still some Hershey mud there, it really just appears black under normal lighting, our lifts have been occupied but I will try to reshoot that in the next couple days.\r\n\r\nThe PO had the car completely mechanically rebuilt from stem to stern so this car is probably the best running Auburn I have ever driven, and I\u2019ve driven more than my fair share of them. You can drive this car cross country without hesitation.\r\n\r\nTo answer the questions posed so far:\r\n\r\nThe PO Had new springs installed, so that\u2019s why it \u201cstands tall\u201d which was his intension.\r\n\r\nThe wipers were rebuilt as well and work perfectly. This is where they park on Auburns. They are not really in the line of vision of the driver but my single handed video angle makes that look funky. \r\n\r\nThere is some debate about how prevalent wide white walls were in period. Some think they were more the exception than the rule. Obviously they became very popular in the 60s and 70s. I\u2019ve seen a lot of top show cars restored with black walls in the last few years, easy enough to change if that\u2019s not your taste.\r\n\r\nThis is one of the finest tops I have ever seen on an Auburn Phaeton-probably an 8k top-and as a salesman I have not wanted to wrinkle it, but do guarantee it to operate properly and will provide detailed instructions to the new owner. I will say that the engine sounded noisy in the driving video. That said, I have no experience with the Lycoming straight 8 and that may be a normal sound. Perhaps it is a result of the aluminum head allowing more noise through. I once had a 1964 Rambler with an aluminum block engine and it always had a lot of mechanical noise even though all was in order with the engine. It could be easily reconnected, if say you live in a hilly area and want to use the low range. \r\n\r\nI never shift my SC Cabriolet into low range even though I can. Low range is really only for extreme hill climbing in my opinion.\r\n\r\nI have driven this car on B roads only so had it up to about 55 and it was not wound out by any means. I have tried hard to get my cabriolet to be a \u201cHighway car\u201d and using an app on my phone to check its true speed have had it above 70 at about 2700 rpm. That being said- you still get passed like you\u2019re standing still in modern traffic which seems to be 80-90 around here anyway.\r\n\r\nThis motor was just rebuilt by a very reputable specialist. There is some minor valve noise which I think is pretty common on these engines and the valves are adjustable so it may be time to do that after 1700 miles covered. It\u2019s also a good idea to retorque the head bolts periodically after a rebuild . The Chrysler flathead six takes three thin tappet wrenches is best done when the engine is running and the access panels are off and a bit of oil is dripping everywhere. DOne correctly you can get them to have nearly no valve train noise. The custom and Salon monikers were really more used on the 31-33/4 Leamy designed cars. Big differences there grill, fenders, bumpers, etc.\r\nI have seen the Salon term used on the 35/6 Buehrig cars but can\u2019t tell you what the differences are, I think they are relatively minor trim upgrades such as chromed hinges on the cabriolet.\r\n\r\nThe wheel discs on John\u2019s car are a Salon thing I\u2019m pretty sure and those are available and easily installed.
