Ferrari released the featherweight 206 Dino in 1965 which stood to overthrow the 904 in hill climbs and endurance racing. At the same time, changes in GT regulations meant the elimination of the rules that had dictated the design of the 904\u2019s box section frame. The bonding techniques that had been employed in the body and frame made allowed for tremendous variations in the rigidity in the chassis, which made the return to a tubular frame with an unstressed body more desirable. 1966 regulations eased production requirements from 100 to just 50 units, a figure that Porsche\u2019s marketing department felt could be achieved with purpose-built racing cars. \r\n\r\nMost significantly, 28-year-old Ferdinand Pi\u00ebch became the new head of Porsche Research and Development. His vision was to create an entirely new generation of race cars. The body of the 906 was developed in the wind tunnel for optimal aerodynamic efficiency and resulted in a 0.35 drag coefficient, and ducts fed air into the brakes, transaxle, and oil cooler to combat heat during long racing stints. With oil and a dry fuel tank, the 906 weighed in at a mere 1,275 pounds and was capable of a top speed of approximately 170mph. \r\n\r\nThe 906 was significantly lighter, more rigid, and more powerful than the 904, and paved the way for the 910, 907, 908, and 917s which were a force to be reckoned with over the subsequent years. \r\n\r\nWith its original owner, Sepp Greger, 906-127 dominated the 1966 European Hillclimb Championship. There is an unprecedented amount of documentation of ownership, provenance, race history, and physical documents that are typically lost over the decades. The majority of the front section of the frame from the cabin forward is covered and bonded to the fiberglass body.\r\n\r\nImage #5 below is one of the two \u201csecret\u201d frame production number stamps. This is a very important feature of an original frame. We have inspected many 906s over the years that are missing these frame production numbers. These stamps do not match the last two numbers of the VIN on any of the 906s that we have inspected over the years- they are a standalone number that is tied to production. The diameter of the tubing is correct throughout and there are numerous examples of the original gas welds throughout.\r\n\r\nThere is an addition behind the main roof hoop at the rear firewall. That is a removable roll bar that has been mounted for vintage racing that has two plates welded onto the original frame and bolts in from underneath with two braces that tie into the trailing arm mounting point. There has also been a modification to the driver-side gusset at the back of the frame to allow the use of the 906E-type brace that runs diagonally across the engine. This ties into another gusset in the frame.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, there is a complete chain of custody that this car is not a replica or one that has been built from the wreckage of another car. The German government-issued Wagenpass and Fahrzuegbrief are also good indicators that the car was not wrecked or written off in the period.\r\n\r\nSCRA Hall of Famer, vintage race car collector, and former Porsche Dealer, Gery Sutterfield owned chassis 906-127. Gerry is well respected in the Porsche community for his knowledge of the fiberglass prototype cars and of course the years he campaigned one of the Gulf 917s in vintage racing. Chassis 906-127 was also vetted by prototype expert Jerry Pantis, historian and author of the book 'The Porsche 904, 906 & 910 in the Americas'. Lastly- the car was owned by collector Jean Goutal, who Kevin Jeannette painstakingly restored the car for over a four-year period. \r\n\r\nThe provenance and documentation file on chassis 906-127 is as good as it gets and certainly matches or exceeds that of the 910 that we sold in the first Gruppe P auction.\r\n\r\nFeel free to contact us directly via the contact seller button or inspect the car in person in our Durham, NC showroom. The frame hung upside down in our garage rafters for a few years and parts in boxes. We were collecting bits here and there for years. Probably the most interesting part was the huge plastic rear louvered window. Where do you get that? Even Vasek didn't have one and could not get one. \r\n\r\nThe local PCA had a small ad \"some race parts too\" for a Porsche garage sale in Laguna Beach. We drove down and, in the garage, way in the back was a big plastic window. I asked what it was for and was told \"a race car\". We immediately recognized an untrimmed, unmolested factory 906 rear window. Ask the guy how much? He said \"dunno, $500?\" The money nearly burned up from atmospheric friction coming out of my pocket. \r\n\r\nIt was apparent we could not afford to restore the car especially as a spider. We had taken a second on the house and used my street 914-6 as collateral to buy it. Thanks to lots of OT from doubles we actually paid the loan off pretty quickly. \r\n\r\nSo along comes a chance to buy 935K4-01 from John Fitzpatric Racing. The other choices were his 956 or a 935k3. A doctor bought the K3 and the 956 would not fit in the two-car garage.
