On example is the pump for the tank vapors which is part of the emissions controls on the s54 the wiring to it has 4 versus 3 wires or the reverse I can't remember off hand and swapping the pump won't work, you'd have to swap the ECU and wire harness. BMW enthusiast are some of the best and can and will swap just about any engine into any chassis. You just don't see s54's being swapped into any Z3's coupes or roadsters for good reason, it's just really hard if not impossible. The z4 uses the same s54 engine as the 01 & 02 z3 so it's not a swap at all just a replacement engine. s54's are getting routinely swapped into older pre-emissions e30's and e36 chassis' with the donner ECU's and engine wiring harness going in at the same time or with stand alone ECU's where the chassis & emissions wiring and controls don't come into play. And there are plenty of swaps going on with roadsters, now mostly LS motors since they are so inexpensive. \nSorry to debate in a public forum but have you owned an s54 z3 and worked on it for several years ??
