This car with just the base 347 2bbl. engine is rated at 270 hp - the same as a '57 Corvette with the optional 270 hp 2-4bbl 283 and just 13 hp less then Chevrolet's absolute top dog, the rare and expensive 283 hp 283 fuel injected engine and a full 90 hp more than the 180 hp 2bbl 283 which was the base V8 engine for Chevrolet passenger cars in '57. On top of that, any Pontiac could have also been had with a 290 hp 347 4-bbl. engine at slight additional cost and up to 317 hp if ordered with Pontiac's optional 347 3-2bbl engine. I was a mere lad of 5 in '57 when my dad decided to buy a new car. He narrowed it down to Pontiac as his choice. I was young but I adored cars so much even then. \n\nDuring those days, the dealer would let a prospective buyer test-drive a car by taking it home and keeping it overnight. These cars were demos and were usually beautiful, loaded, top-of-the-line cars. \n\nI remember my mother and me waiting outside to see him as he arrived. And here he came in a 1957 Star Chief 2-door hardtop in Kenya Ivory with a Tartan Red (dark red sort of like burgundy) side spear and I believe the top was also that color but I may be wrong about that part. It had the 3-spinner wheel covers against those gorgeous wide whitewalls. I thought that was just about the most beautiful car I had seen in all of my 5 years! We spent some time looking it all over before departing on a test drive. I remember waving at all my friends as we drove by hoping they all saw me in it. I was so proud of my dad for picking this car.\n\nI was up the next morning early to go out to look at it some more. After breakfast, Dad departed for the day and said he expected to be home with a new car that evening. I was outside waiting for him and here he came! In a new '57 Chieftain???? Which was sort of a medium turquoise/aqua color with a white spear and top. And small hubcaps on color-matched wheels. \n\nHey I may have been young but I knew this was a HUGE step down from what he had test driven.
