The car had started failing it's bi-annual California smog tests, so the owner registered the car under non-operational status and stored the car. Since I bought the car I have attended to a few issues and driven the car approximately 500 miles.\n\nThe original US owner was a noted Plastic Surgeon / Jaguar enthusiast who imported this car in 1985/1986. I have all the importation/federalization/shipping paperwork. Mine was a V12/quad headlamp version and it was a phenomenal car to drive. I had to do a full brake job on the rear including replacing one caliper. There's two ways to go about it. Method 1. Remove entire rear suspension (which is surprisingly easy....maybe 6 bolts and the driveshaft and it comes out as a complete caged assembly....very slick). Service brakes. Reinstall suspension. Hardest part of this method is getting the exhaust apart without having to cut it if it's rusted in place, since it runs through a hole in the suspension. Method 2: Mentally prepare yourself for a long, boring day. Drink several beers. Jack the car up as high as possible and get your most comfortable layin' cardboard out. Lay on it. If you are lucky enough to have one of the later cars with the access hole in the brake rotor (which this '85 should have) then you can use it to access the two caliper bolts using a special ground-down 5/8\" socket that fits in a certain way that allows you to remove the caliper bolt 1/32nd of a turn at a time. They are long bolts. Turn 1/32nd of a turn one million times. Repeat for second bolt. If you have an earlier car without the access holes, or you need to replace a rotor, Method 2 does nothing for you. See Method 1. Brake pads are easy to change. Brake calipers, maybe 8 hours laying under the car at 1/32nd of a turn of a bolt at a time. Rotors require almost complete suspension disassembly.\n\nI never found my V12 car particularly difficult to work on or keep running well, but maintenance was tedious due to packaging. An alternator change took about 3 hours due to having to remove stuff in the way. Again, not hard or expensive, but tedious. \n\nPlease note this care does not seem to need either of these services! Just kind of ranting. These cars are fantastic, but this is my main issue with everyone on the internet hating on them. Sure, if you're afraid to get your manicured nails dirty, an 8-hour brake caliper job is going to run you thousands at the Jag mechanic. So, everyone prefers to denigrate a fantastic automobile rather than learn to be a man and wrench on it yourself. \n\nBest bet? Dive in and buy one. Download Kirby Palm's fantastic, phenomenal book about the XJ-S (it's a free 800-page tome about real-world fixes for anything and everything on an XJ-S). Buy a parts car since they are so cheap and plentiful. The blue plates were issued by the California DMV from 1969 or so through the 80's. Blue plates on this car show that it was registered in California in the 80's and has been here since then, adding to the provenance of the car. Prior to the blue plates, the plates were black, so cars with those are highly valued for the same reason. Our DMV has now re-issued the retro-style black plates for an additional fee.\n\nRegarding the tires, the current Pirelli P4000s have plenty of tread and don't show any cracking, but they are date coded from 2005 and are no longer available. I would guess the tires have no more than a few thousand miles on them. The Tire Rack lists 11 HR rated tires in the 215 70R15 size. 10 of them are snow/ice tires, and the remaining tire is a Vredestein classic with a 220 wear rating @$300 each. I will be putting a basic T speed rated tire on the car and the new owner can decide if they want to keep those, or want to switch to a different tire of their choice size and brand-wise. Popular replacement sizes are 215 65 R15, 235 60R15 and 225 60R15, although the overall diameter for those sizes will be a bit different than the OEM size. They're not expensive at all and no more difficult to install than any other car. It's been a few years since I worked on mine (sold it in 2011, still good friends with the guy who bought it from me so that's something) but I think this is one of those cars where the rotors bolt into the backside of the wheel hub, so you have to remove the wheel bearings to change rotors if that's needed. No big deal as you should be repacking wheel bearings periodically anyway. These are not unit bearings but normal ones that you need to repack and set preload on when you reinstall. A car that has not been over-heated and the numerous small hoses are in good shape, these cars can run reliably for years (think Porsche and their bearing issues as a parallel hysteria). Personally, like most, I have garage storage issues. The more I see of the V12 and how they are being given away, it is getting real tempting to pick up a low mileage, well cared for example anyway. This is a very specific fault that almost all XJ-Ss will succumb to, and it leads to almost all of the other common faults as well. The V12 is a HUGE engine and takes up a lot of space. The radiator is just barely big enough to keep it cool, but it will do the job. Unfortunately, when the radiator starts to lose any flow, this cooling capacity is decreased and the V12 starts to run hot. Now, this leads to a couple of things. 1. a very, very tight engine bay leaves no airspace for this heat to dissipate to. So the engine absorbs all its' own heat. 2. The coolant temp sensor is at the front of the \"b\" bank of cylinders. Due to the design of the radiator (it's a very unusual design) the coolant goes FIRST to the \"b\" bank where the temp sensor is...then everywhere else after that. The problem being the \"a\" bank might be overheating but your gauge still reads normal or just a little high. So now you're driving around with your coolant temperature gauge at normal but a crap-ton of heat built up under the hood. What's happening now? You're degrading all the 1980s vacuum hoses, a lot of which reside under the right intake manifold and directly above that exhaust manifold. You're also killing the delicate insulation on the fuel injector wiring harness. Both of these lead to running issues that a lot of people aren't willing to pay the labor to sort or to take the time themselves to do it. OK, so you've just finished your drive around town with your engine running hot, you park the car and it starts to cool. You might be walking away and hear a \"tink\" sound. That was your hardened steel exhaust valve seat dropping due to the excessive heat and the difference in the thermal rate of expansion between the steel seat and the aluminum head. This is second only to redneck 'Murican shadetree mechanics in being a leading killer of Jag V12 engines. \n\nOther than what I've described here, these engines have very, very few problems. So what's the takeaway? If you're buying a V12, JUST DO IT. Don't be afraid of it. If it runs, it hasn't dropped a valve seat yet, so drive it home, park it and pull the radiator. Send it to your local rad shop to be boiled out. Budget about $800 for a new fuel injector and underhood wiring harness (you're saving that much money just buying a V12 anyway) as you can assume it's crispy. Budget another $8.37 and replace all the vacuum hoses. Reinstall radiator, which has been returned to full flow capacity, and enjoy driving the crap out of your uber-reliable V12 XJ-S.\n\nThe most ironic part of all this, and the reason that I say to just go ahead and do all of this, is that most of these radiators get plugged because their owners took care of them when they were new! See, Jag had it in their service protocol to add something akin to Bar's Leaks coolant leak preventer to the radiator with each service. So every time a dutiful XJ-S owner took their car in to the dealer for service, they dumped a jar of goop into the radiator, contributing to filling it up with sticky gooey garbage. When I pulled mine and stuck a hose in the top, virtually nothing came out the bottom port, it was that plugged up. But also for this reason, MOST XJ-Ss will have a compromised radiator, and have had SOME amount of the heat damage I mention going on, so best bet is to just plan for it.\n\nAlso the little rubber fuel hoses that go from the injector rail to each individual injector.
