This bike comes out and its romping stomping ready to duke it out with Triumph, BSA and Norton. They took them on and in large part bested them. \r\n\r\nWe've seen this repeated with the Acura NSX and the Miata to name just a few examples of out engineering the originators of a concept\r\n\r\nIn the mid 70s I rode about a 71 or so for a friend 200 miles to his college. It was my first long distance trip on a bike and it was flawless, stable and predictable. Glad to see it here. The very early bikes (the first 300 or 1000-I can't remember) had engine casings that were sand cast. Those pull serious money. So does a bevel-drive 900SS but I couldn't afford one of those even back in the early 90's! \n\n@austin_alfa: My cafe version had upgraded shocks, fork springs, swingarm bearings and steering head bearings and I would describe the handling as acceptable in that form at least. Too bad I never got a chance to try any of the 60's/70's bikes that were considered to be good handling such as the featherbed Nortons to see how it compared. According to Bert Hopwood the BSA/Triumph triples were finally given the go ahead when at the very end of a long meeting a clever executive let it out that he had it on good authority that Honda was coming out with a 750-4 soon. Fortunately they had already worked out the triple a few years previously so he was able to pull the project out of cold storage and the company was able to produce it quickly. Cycle and Cycleworld magazines arrive on the same day in July with feature articles on the new Honda 750- first four cylinder for a long time, first disc brake, first electric start, first turn signals, you name it. I pore over both magazines and immediately call my dealer in Ann Arbor who sold Hondas and Nortons and ask if I can switch my deposit. He says sure, I'm first in line. I get back to school on the Sunday of Labor Day (49 years ago tomorrow) and my bike, looking just like this one), is in the window with a big sold sign. What a long 48 hours till Tuesday. Turns out it was the only one that came in (long after I sold it did I hear about and realize it was a sand cast engine) and he told me he would have no parts until spring.\r\n\r\nThat bike sure drew a crowd- it was embarrassing to ask folks to move so I could get to it. They used to be found for a song! People would let them sit with fuel in the tank and carbs and then they couldn't start them. They'd throw it on Craigslist for in the paper for sale for $1000 or less usually if they couldn't get it to fire. Pop off the bowls and clean the Jets out and do the same for the petcock and you were usually able to make them start. Only once did that not work and it took me a few days to figure out what was wrong - had enough sunflower seeds in the exhaust to feed a family of Catholic squirrels for at least two winter's! \r\nThe rest though, I would usually enjoy them for month or two and then sell them off for a thousand or two more than I paid.\r\nIt wasn't long though, and the cafe racer craze made the prices go thru the roof. \r\nSo that's when I started to replace the sohc Honda's with dohc super sports. Still got an '83 900f that I convince myself to throw a leg over once in a while. I'm not as good a rider as I used to be. He was invited to a big meeting in Japan that included Mr. Honda. The executives were cooing about a \"big\" project they had going. Bob said \" Well I hope it's not a parallel twin like the British build\". Suddenly everyone got quiet and asked what he meant. The kind of look you get when someone says they knew the punch bowl had been p**d in. \"Well, the British built parallel twins and they're awful; they vibrate a lot. \"You should build a four cylinder\". Mr Honda leaned back in his chair with a big grin and said \"We have much experience with four cylinder!\". ( Honda had smashed GP racing with their fours). In less than a year the Honda four was introduced. Honda sent him a four in appreciation of his suggestion. They didn't think it would be real successful, so they went with sandcasting. After 7400, they switched to diecasting. Chain technology wasn't up to speed and consequently early ones chunked chains and blew out cases. Honda was known to send out an entire engine to replace the warranty claim. When the four was introduced at the Las Vegas dealer's convention, the British dealers knew they were toast. Triumph/BSA had a 3 cylinder they were grinning about. When one of the reps saw the Honda, he went upstairs and updated his resume. A while back a magazine called it the most significant motorcycle of the century. Electric starters, disc brakes became the standard. Oh yeah, and reliability. (Yes I am getting up there -lol). I would agree with you regarding handling - a fantastic in the twisties. However to keep my BSA in riding/running condition I had to become a mechanic. Endless adjustments to the Amal carbs, constant replacement of the clutch cables, burnt valves, and of course let us not forget the lovely English electrics (on a 2 week trip through the Rockies - burnt out 4 light bulbs). The Honda was a joy - I never had to do anything - other than change the oil. And was it fast! Fastest bike on the road other than the Kawasaki 900! The BSA may have handled better and looked cooler buy if given a choice again I would take the Honda 750 any day. A bike you can ride ALL day without any issue and leave most behind.
