What would you say about my SL? There is a tag on the transmission denoting a rebuild. There are receipts for the heads being redone. It's been in Phoenix since at least 1991, no rust anywhere. odometer says 291,000 and doesn't work. Now, when I pulled the cluster to see about fixing the gears, I found that the date code on it is from 1985, four years after the car was built. The VIN is a euro, 1981, too old for Carfax. Yes, the broken odo is really high, but it's also from another car. This is certainly a TMU, but my point is, why in particular does it matter? on this M3, I'd expect it to fetch less than one with an absurdly low number, but when I see one with 33k I figure the real story is something like my SL; it's convoluted and probably not actual. It's kinda like the porsche market. Don't get me wrong, I love the car. That being said, while they have their place in the chronocles of BMW Motorsport history and have a very interesting pedegree, they are not particularly refined or comfortable drivers. Beyond that, there were nearly 17,000 units produced. While that's certainly less quantity than the subsequent and ubiquitous E36 M3, it is still hardly a small number.\n\nCompare that with say, the e24 M6/M635 that was produced in a third of the quantity, are much more comfortable to drive, have a robust and powerful engine that is a direct discendent from the M1 (so still significant pedigree) and yet they seem to have significantly less market value than equivalent e30's.\n\nSame for Porsches. Great cars, but huge production numbers that in my mind don't justify the price. \n\nObviously the market will bear these prices and good for the sellers, but the above is why I say I don't get it. This is in no way to rag on this seller or this car in question and I'm sorry to have gone off topic - I should have probably kept the initial remark to myself. Was maintained by Factory master tech for the last 4 years. Have service records going back to 2006. Engine was rebuilt last month, have currently 330 miles on rebuild without issue or leaks. The Crank was replaced with NEW crankshaft and connecting rods where replace .JE piston 11:1 with new rings 3 Layer steel head gasket. All mains and connecting rods bearings replaced. Oil pump was rebuilt. Timing chain replaced. Replaced all gasket with bottom end. Head was set out cleaned pressure checked and decked. Valve stem guild and seals were replaced and valve seat recut. All upper end gaskets replaced. Windows work great. Gearbox has slight leak maybe a drip every other day. Diff isn't leaking. Driver\u2019s seat can be touchy. Suspension tight handles very nicely. Brake calipers good dust boots could use replacing. I just replaced both front marker lights Saturday aligned car and replaced driver\u2019s door lock. Darn thing broke Thursday. Clean and replaced tail light bulb and sockets. Lubed door hinges replaced glove box latch. That was my day. Oh the there's a bulb in the cluster to goes out every once and a while. Sunroof Vents with no issues, but doesn\u2019t sound to good going back. I have removed the sunroof and checked operation .It may need the drive cables replaced. Parts cost around 100.00 plus 200-300.00 in labor. Pictures and video explain the way the car looks. I can get the Factory 15 inch rims and would have them refinished if buyer doesn\u2019t want the current 18in rims on the car but I will only swap. Buyer won\u2019t get both sets.
