I have had Ferraris and I\u2019m a current Ferrari owner. I have worked on since I was 4 years old with my Dad (an Engineer). As I mentioned in my previous comment I have seen Ferraris with stellar maintenance and superb drivability come up with disastrous Compression tests. Secondly, a major is not just belts and fluids. On a 25 year old car (especially one maintain as well as this one) a lot of items have to be replaced (they are never mentioned as part of a major either) as they are very likely still the originals. It\u2019s very hard to find competent mechanics and I do all maintenance myself. Don\u2019t take me wrong. This is an amazingly looking and maintained car and for me it ticks all the boxes for my 3rd Ferrari in my collection, albeit I would prefer less mileage (wouldn\u2019t mind the premium along with it). Here\u2019s is the problem. Having the experience/s from previous attempted purchases re compression, I would have to factor that in into my bid and frankly that\u2019s not fair for this gorgeous 456, neither for you nor me, and most likely will keep me out of having it. A Compression/leak down cost is negligible and when/if presented with the car, not only shows knowledge of the one having performed that major but it takes any doubt out of the biding process.. I purchased a car on here, relying on someone else's PPI, and found during my first service that the PPI missed several critical items. I had no recourse because the PPI was not mine. Sellers here have upped the ante in terms of what they provide. DME reports, paint meter readings, undercarriage photos, driving videos, and service history. No matter how comprehensive the presentation, there are always commenters that want the seller to go the extra hundred miles - \"please remove the rocker panels and photograph the whoozit.\" \"Seller, kindly detach the motor mounts, drop the engine, and photograph the number stamped on the CV joints.\" There is a point where a bidder assumes some personal responsibility for the investigation he or she wants to make - and I say that as a successful bidder. Finally, @Vega74 impugning the seller's mechanic because he didn't recommend a compression test during a major service is flat ridiculous. That mechanic is one of best marque specialists in the country, and (puffing chest out and putting nose in the air) I happen to know SEVERAL people who know people who have Ferrari's, and I have never heard of a compression test as part of a major service unless the car displayed symptoms related to bad compression. If you want at Ferrari GT and have no need for a back seat, then buy the 550, if you will use the back seat, or are seeking a GT value, buy the 456. \r\n\r\nThere has been a lively exchange on the need for leak down, compression and other testing so permit me offer a practical view: I own my '99 550 from new, now with 136,000 miles and 14 sets of Pirelli P Zeros (so reliable and responsive a tire). Recently I decided to rebuild it with \"spare no expense\". Authorized Ferrari service determined head/valves/guides/camshafts did not need replacement or work. No need for compression testing nor leak-down . . . These engines are bullet proof as is the six speed box (my first clutch went out at 35,000 miles, and I'm still on the second one, and I drive aggressively. The 6 speed box is similarly reliable and stands up to hard use. \r\n\r\nWhomever buys this beauty (with few miles) should budget for a lot of new rubber (hoses, belts, etc.) to refresh her, and do not go cheap on factory-authorized service including timing chains at 30,000.
