Him and another friend who had a 73 short box w/wench and I with a 74 short box w/wench went 4 wheeling up the Noon Day trail in the Bohemia mining area east of Cottage Grove, OR. As we were going up a narrow cat trail cut into a steep mountain we came upon a 3 ft diameter log across the road. I was in the rear and backed down the road about 1/2 mile to where we could turn around. My friend in the short box who was in the lead came running down the hill and said our other friend in the F250 had backed off the edge and was afraid to get out because his truck might slide down the hill. I came up behind him and hooked wench to his trailer hitch, Friend in othe short box got turned around by winching his truck up the side of hill. We than put a snatch block on a tree and run it through front wheelwell to frame and proceded to get the F250 back up on the road. It does take some very coarse sandpaper, a mirror, a flashlight, a camera and commitment. And maybe a little cleaner and a rag to keep the surface clean as you sand. In this case it was easier to do with two people, because you are working blind and in some areas that can have as little as 1\" of clearance, so it's helpful to have a second set of hands. When you do find it, you gotta hold the mirror in one hand, a camera in the other, and need a light to get a clean photo. If possible, have a shop dog on hand for moral support and encouragement. I believe the one pictured on this truck is the one under the passenger side of the cab. There is also one located directly next to the starter (on a FE truck) that may be easier to locate. However that may not always be the case depending on how well it was stamped or condition of the frame. The one under the cab is usually more protected and will be a clearer vin if frame condition is a factor. Ether way I\u2019m super happy the topic of frame vins is being talked about! Always appreciate your comments here on BaT, especially our auctions, thanks for all the support. \r\n\r\nThis is a truck that can be driven and enjoyed just like it is right now, and just do small upgrades, myself, I would just drive it like we have this last year, it has been a blast.\r\n\r\nMy Opinion, as we have mentioned earlier, this truck is one that needs everything but at the same time it doesn't need anything. Some folks like shiny new paint, and some like this original survivor type of truck. I guess it's how ever someone looks at it in general. There are 2 ways go to with it. Myself repainting it would be a crime, and this is my opinion, I love not only trucks like this, but its just kind of my thing, this is why I was so attracted to it when I first saw it. How many Original paint Highboys are there around, that look like this, it's a time capsule, besides the engine change. I love the paint on it, I love the vintage look it has, there is no question that this truck has not been altered, original frame, vins, original fenders, hood, cab, bed, tailgate, its all original to the truck. The only thing I would do to the outside of it, is go around the gutter, get all the old sealant out, and reseal it, the gutter looks good all the way around, when this sealant fails, that is what causes other rust issues. I would find another hood, or just keep this one, the outside is fine, but the hood and cowl were repainted many moons ago. But it would be nice if you could locate an original Wimbledon white hood, I would replace it, then you have original paint on almost the whole truck. Yes you could fix the back of both cab corners, which are only seen underneath, and then fix the areas under the gutters when you open the door. The frame and undercarriage is in really nice condition. The bed is solid, I would either clean it POR15 it, or have it media blasted, and have LineX or Rhino liner spayed in, other then that the bed is great. The fenders are really good, doors are good. There is one spot of rust on the passenger side floor board, about a 3x3 section that needs to be replaced, if one wanted too. You could have the seat redone as well, and windshield. Other then that I would just leave this truck alone and drive it, fix little things here and there, I would never do a full blown restoration, its as survivor.
