Another interesting fact about SS's: They were the first street cars which Alfa equipped with a 5-Speed \"split case\" transmission, introduced mid-year in 1959. The gauges in this car are correct for a Giulietta as @Chas_H has pointed out. Finally, after connecting with the owner who did the restoration, it appears that @Chas_H may be correct about the in-progress engine photos. The Seller has several Alfa's in restoration process (including one which will be on the lawn at Pebble Beach this year!) , which contributes to the photo-record keeping confusion. We'll aim to get that sorted shortly. The engine in the car is number, AR00120*00812*, and the 120 prefix is correct for a Veloce Sprint/Spider/Sprint Speciale. It being an Alfa and knowing that it should easily make such a trip our intention was to drive the car back to Texas. Although I'd been working on and driving Alfas for years, this was my first experience in a Speciale and our 1200 mile drive home was revelatory in many ways. \n\nSpeciale's were intended to be genuine long-distance cars. In contrast to other period Alfas they were fitted with 24 gallon (I think) gas tanks (a feature that made the car perfect for making our typical l-o-n-g distance runs on on I-10). The shape of the car proved to be as aerodynamic as it is elegant---very quiet on the road where my GTV was not. Even better was the interior comfort. If you come across a Speciale be sure and check out the shape of the interior door frame. It is gently curved and was obviously intended to provide a little more shoulder room in what is a pretty snug cabin. \n\nMy friend and I had a great drive back to Texas. The 1.6 engine came stock with veloce tuning (higher compression, headers, cams) and could easily keep up with the trucks, all of whom were rather dramatically violating the prevailing 55mph speed limits. The truckers loved seeing this little red Alfa drafting along in their wake. Our only spot of trouble happened outside of Federicksburg when the radiator blew up. We refilled with water, added a pressure relief radiator cap and finished our drive home.
