You could get it with the color keyed side spear or not, a vinyl roof or not, but the oddest choice was side spats or none. If you didn\u2019t get the spats a poorly fitted trim piece was placed over the body that supported the spat. It looked tacked on and I wondered if Buick didn\u2019t have confidence in the side spat look to configure all Rivieras with them. Side spats are kind of an odd feature, (in my opinion) and \u201870 was the only Riviera to ever have them. That it was a one year only model should bring some interest. This is a very nice example. It had the most power from the factory at 370 and it was the only year to have fender skirts. You had a choice of full skirt or half skirt.\r\nThe sweep spear molding was an option and I think it makes the car. Those without it look too plain. The molding was painted body color and the outer edges were chrome. However, under the paint you will find that the entire molding is chrome and some owners have removed the paint for the total chrome look. Not what I would do if it were mine.\r\nBy this time, Bill Mitchell was more interested in designing the boat tail for 1971. The same issue afflicted the 1966-1967 front bumper of the Toronado even more so because of all the weight up front. When he drove the car off the showroom floor after it arrived at the dealership, it immediately increased in value by 50%. The California title with his signature on it went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction.\r\n\r\nA year into ownership he was changing a tire in the high desert outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico when he was bit three times by a rattlesnake. After five long days of excruciating pain, the snake finally died. Later that same year he returned the car to the Buick dealership for scheduled maintenance. A disagreement developed over the proper spark plug gap. The Most Interesting Man Alive eventually had to punch the Service Manager in the face to prove a point. When the officer saw who was behind the wheel of the big Buick coupe, he wrote himself a ticket.\r\n\r\nIn the mid 70s he had the Riviera shipped across the pond on the Queen Mary so he could compete in the Tour de France. He won the race, but was later disqualified for riding a unicycle. On the voyage back home he rebuilt the transmission using only the key to his cabin and dental floss. Back in California he had the factory clock removed due to the fact that time is always on his side.\r\n\r\nHe drove the green beast to Chuck Norris\u2019 house to teach him the marshal arts. On the way back home he pulled the Riviera over to the side of the road and had an awkward moment, just to see what it felt like.\r\n\r\nHe and the Riviera are both considered national treasures in countries they have never even visited.
