I believe they are used in this case for \"splash\" control into the engine compartment (even without the fenders), styling by continuing the body line forward to the grille, as well as providing mounting support for the bottom of the '33/'34 Ford grilles. BTW, this is not a \"Model A\" (1928 - 1931), it is a \"Model 40\", as are all of the 1933/1934 Fords.\r\nRegarding the RNM, I was surprised - this appears to be a nicely built driver-quality roadster.
