The brown carpet on the passenger side, however, hides a piece of plywood that covers an opening not quite large enough to re-fasten the plywood after inserting two standard bottles of liquor (discovered during a later trip from San Antonio to Nueva Laredo). Just large enough to cover with carpet, but not so large as to allow them to remain hidden. The border patrol evidently knew this because they discovered it immediately and confiscated the bottles from two underage boys. For some reason that was the only punishment. The originals were split rims that bolted together. You had to use tubes in the tires to keep air in them. They also had oddball mounting hardware that was unobtainium even in the late 70s. \r\n\r\nThese modern repops look \"right\". They're really close to the originals and can be inexpensively replaced if one gets damaged. Back in the sixties, there was a German guy in Poughkeepsie, NY who would take orders for new VWs, BMWs and Benzes. He seemed to be well connected with a network in Germany. His wife was a professor at Vassar College. One paid him a deposit, he ordered exactly what you wanted from the appropriate tourist delivery program and he utilized well to do Vassar students looking for a European vacation to travel to Germany, pick the cars up and put some miles on them. They were then imported at a discount (no duty) as they were \"used\" cars. Then he delivered them to the local customers who ordered them. My Dad purchased a 1965 VW Type 3 Squareback this way, it was a 1500S dual carb engine with the domed pistons requiring high test, rated at 65 hp, unusual for a VW in the US at the time. My Uncle (Dads brother) in turn purchased a 1966 VW Type 3 Fastback. It had the 1600 engine, also with dual carbs but regular compression. Both cars ended up being traded in in the mid seventies (probably for nothing) before I could speak up... When I later asked my Uncle why he didn't get the much cooler Notchback, his answer was immediate and simple, the Fastback had more trunk space and looked cooler in the mid-sixties. Perhaps that is what contributed to the lack of interest in the US for the Notchback at that time. \n\nMy first car at 14 was a 67 squareback, which became a parts car for the 68 fastback that was my first car, followed by a 71 Squareback that I commuted to College in. Wish I kept it.\n\nOf particular interest on this car is whether or not they replaced the original single port cylinder heads with dual port heads when they installed the dual carbs. Being a 66, it should have a 6V system and horizontal blade style turn signals.
