We saw no reason the replace the steering box. Our source for the dash provided it fully upholstered with all vents and related ductwork, which made the swap easy. Then, we sent the core back so he could do another dash. I owned an E28 back in the day and sold high-end car audio--I'll comment on that in a bit. I\"m not sure I understand the compression and leakdown figures on the Bavarian receipt--it seems the leakdown on a number of cylinders was extreme. Compression was generally within acceptable limits, but the leakdown references \"rings\" on those values. What am I missing?\r\n\r\nAudio nerdery for anyone who cares: As for the audio system, it's neat. I would not have done the Continental radio--I am guessing it has no line outs, hence the line-level converter. It seems like a nice one, but there are plenty of aesthetically appealing head units (with selectable color illumination) you could use with high volt line outs and skip that complexity. The A/D/S stuff is legendary in some circles but a bit of a mixed bag. That crossover offers basically zero customization, only 12 db/octave slopes, and very tricky pots. I do like the little EQ and the placement is slick. That's the kind of install I would want to tweak things without diving into head unit menus. Not sure what Boston speakers you put up front, but I like the stock locations and hopefully they have nice passive crossovers. It looks like the back stock speakers are disconnected, but according to the diagram, there's another set of Boston separates that I guess are firing. . .through the rear shelf? For sound quality, rear fill is mostly optional, but thought I'd ask. \r\n\r\nAs for the amp and subs, the PH15 is a bit of a dubious choice. It's a sound quality amp and ordinarily I'd say great! But it's been installed upside down and it's going to be stressed in this installation. It's only a 50x6 regulated power supply amp and any free air sub is power hungry--particularly Punch 15s. Just look at the magnet assemblies on those bad boys. 50 watts a sub would barely move them. So, that amp's gonna be working hard upside down, and the heat sinks are designed to dissipate heat through the casing fins--which are. . .upside down. So, the heat comes off the sinks and rises back into the amp. It's a common installation error because it looks slick and if the amp isn't working hard and there's plenty of airflow, it'll work. But this amp will probably overheat. \r\n\r\nI judged and listened to a lot of sound quality systems back in the day, and a single 15 can do amazing things. Free-air, not so much, but it really depends on the installation here. Two 15s is kind of overkill in the car and the amp can't do it. Future buyer, if you keep the system, I'd swap the crossover and the amp, and perhaps go to a modern 6-channel with a bridgeable sub channel with power doubling--so, like 60x4 and 240x1. That would get you into the range, although it depends on if those are 4 or 8 ohm subs. \r\n\r\nAudio nerdery aside, I really like the car and if I didn't have a kid to send to college, I'd be a bidder. It looks really good and I like the details like the SII board replacement. Would like to see a video with all seat functions and all the lights, etc. Would like to hear that motor wind out a bit. These wonderful cars were severely undervalued for many years so view prior auction amounts in perspective. My engine is bone stock original with much lower miles but the S38 is bulletproof! It can be rebuilt when the time comes. Apparently a lot was invested in the refurbishment of this one. Will be interesting to see who snags it.
