PSI is low compared to your typical EVO and STi tuner cars, but the cylinder heads on these cars run at/near their thermal limits even at stock boost level of 0.8 bar. Porsche factory 935 race cars would run boost levels in the 1.xx range, and they had to be rebuilt after each endurance racing event. I've had a couple of these, and my first was very similar to this car though with boxed rockers, same spoiler, dogleg 5sp, Recaros. The second one, was more highly developed with CTR brakes, Matter Roll Cage, Bosch MP1.2 Motronic injection, shaved gutters etc. \r\n\r\nAnyway I was working at a Bentley Aston dealership about 2010and the guy wanted to trade the BTR and about 5 other cars on a DBS. Everything from old Land Cruisers to a 964 3.6 for which he wanted the princely sum of $80k. The dealership didn't want anything to do with these cars as they didn't know how to value them. I stepped up and bought the Ruf sight unseen. Only thing I knew about it was the owner said it was a Monster...\r\n\r\nI flew out to Vancovuer to pick the car up. It wasn't a very happy car in Vancouver Traffic and the gearbox was noisy. It had a ridiculous sound system in it that made awful feedback noises. \r\n\r\nI had driven some fast cars, but never any type of Porsche Turbo, though of course I had read about them since I was a kid. Didn't really know what to expect. I finally got the car out of downtown and had my first opportunity to floor the throttle. Nothing, nothing then #$>$%^^!!! **uck this things fast... It actually felt that it was way too much, and that the engine must be ready to blow up. I had no idea what boost the car should be running and had never had a turbocharged car before. The gauge went to 2.0bar and the car was hitting 1.7... I figured that it just couldn't be right so on my 1000km drive back to Calgary I was fixated on the boost gauge trying to keep it under 1.2bar which is what I thought was semi reasonable. \r\n\r\nI took the #3, away from the transcanada, and what followed was probably the best drive I have every had, still etched in my memory. Trying to tame this beast of a car that just wanted to explode down the road. I've never been able to pass people like that before or since. I'd pull out, gun it, and by the time I was along side I would be doing 200km/hr and then have to nail the brakes, shed 100km/hr just to get back in my lane. Not shown in the pics is the K27 series turbo that the BTR uses, a significant performance upgrade over the stock 930 K26 turbo. Another contributor mentioned the non-standard gas tank--it is a 100 litre tank, Ruf-made I believe. Behind the front spoiler is a very efficient oil cooler which allows for much lower oil temps. It is a Ruf item, and is different than the oil cooler Porsche installed on their own 930S Special Wishes cars. Here's my recent experience with one. \r\n\r\nNot too long ago I went to take a look at one of these for sale in a neighboring country in Europe. It was an early 80's 930 which had been converted to BTR spec (like all BTR's if I understood correctly) by RUF some two years after delivery. Apart from an obvious after market steering wheel and gear knob, non electric seats and another color it was this car's twin. All paperwork supported this including a title which stated the conversion by RUF and installment of the rare 5 speed dogleg. The owner was a very friendly older man who had bought the car over fifteen years ago from an important Porsche dealership which doesn't exist anymore. He fell in love with the car (probably after a test drive) and struck a deal without giving it much thought. Never registering it because in his country taxing on powerful engines was very high. He just enjoyed the thought of possessing one and driving it to an occasional Porsche meeting.\r\n\r\nI couldn't drive myself, because of the lack of registration, but the owner took me for some rural laps directly around his farm. Although it was already clear that I couldn't understand him because of the language barrier (his son was there to translate) once in the car he kept speaking frantically about how fast it was. While I was trying to make clear I didn't need prove of that \u2013 especially not with a cold engine \u2013 he floored it anyway. Repeatedly. We blasted from curve to curve up until third gear and I saw the needle going over the 5.000 rpm mark almost every time. The bursts of power and speed blew me away, even though I have substantial experience in driving very powerful cars myself. My feelings were a mix of fear for getting air born because of this wild hearted old mans driving over a bumpy road and sorrow for the engine and the next owner. My friend was filming and photographing the event.\r\n\r\nWe thoroughly went over the car and the paint thickness meter noted some discrepancies which led us to think the BTR had been T-boned on the drivers side. Also the car didn't have the original 5speed anymore, but the 4speed instead. A fact the owner had never noticed since he apparently was love blinded at the time of buying, oblivious afterwards and never really drove the car for long stretches. The way the whole meeting was going we believed him and his son. From an optical technical point of view everything about the engine was in BTR order.\r\n\r\nAfter getting home I contacted RUF. A representative confirmed that the shell was indeed a RUF BTR, but the engine number didn't belong to this particular example and they didn't have any service records for the car. With this news I telephoned the owner's son who seemed genuinely surprised and said they would now have to do some digging for themselves (to the no longer existent selling dealer). They would take the car out the internet which they did. \r\n\r\nThe following month I telephoned with him a couple more times. He told me they were having a hard time trying to find out about the car. Three months later I went to one of the big classic car shows in my area where I saw the exact same car being offered by a dealer. Still with the non original gearbox and engine but now coupled to a 50% higher asking price. \r\n\r\nThis example on the other hand seems to be the real deal. In 2012, I sold my 1986 RUF 911 with 40k miles for $34k. My wife and I flew out to Chicago, bought it and drove it back to philly. It rained the entire way, but the a/c blew cold and we were comfy until just outside Pittsburgh where the front A/C condenser fan burst into flames! This is an unfortunately common Porsche issue. Smoke poured into the cabin and out from under the frunk. I popped the hood, flames came out, and I doused them with my wife\u2019s water bottle. Meanwhile, she was hightailing it half way up the road. After a quick inspection, I discovered the cause, disconnected the connector, closed the hood and coaxed my wife back into what she now believed was a death trap. Only damage? A slightly discolored new battery I bought just prior to the trip. \r\n\r\nLoved that Porsche and only sold it as we were moving to Texas. I paid $20k for the car which shows you just how crazy this market has become. An important point. It only had the RUF tuned 3.3 liter engine. When the turbo kicked in...my God it was fast and scary! Warren welshed on the bet, said it wasn't running street tires.\r\n\r\nI was on the track in my 190e 2.3-16V enjoying the day when a F40 followed by the Yellowbird came up fast in the straight away before the hairpin (turn 7) and both roared past me. The 2.3-16V would get past 100 mph before the hairpin so for those two cars to roar past me they had to be going 30-40 mph faster. I get through the hairpin and I just saw the Yellow, followed by Red blur going through turn 9.....yeah I never saw those two cars on the track with me again.
