This normally, would have made it a 1970 model year car. Back in the 70's, many dealers sold the cars as \"new\" and titled them, the year that they were sold. There were also many dock strikes in this era, so some import cars didn't make it to the dealerships until several months, after they were built, and then shipped. If the car then sat at the dealership for several more months, before being sold, then it likely was titled the year it was sold, which was 1971. The Elans didn't change much from year to year, so this was accepted practice.\n\nThe vacuum system which raises and lowers the headlights, has been replaced by an electric motor. I will check with Steve Smith, at Twin Cam Sports Cars, to see if this is something that he added, or if it was like this when he started the restoration. The switch is hidden inside the ashtray, (sorry smokers). The advantage to this system is that often the original \"fail safe\" vacuum system, on the later Elans could allow the headlights to creep up to the open position, if there was any type of vacuum leak, in the system. (though its a good story and fits with the characters involved) Early S1 and S2 doors were the same outer shape (approximately) but very different on the inside shape and did not have the issue with twist. I believe the issue was created by the way the S3/S4 door shape cures creating internal stresses, which caused the doors to twist. There are similar shrink/twist problems with some other panels on these (try flat-sanding a bonnet) but they are less noticeable.
