So the primary purpose of measuring the paint thickness is to see if the car, or parts of it, have been repainted or if the car still wears its factory-applied paint. The one area that might have received some paint work at some point in time is the left rear fender.\r\n\r\nTo elaborate: a factory panel that's freshly stamped to be painted by a robot in the factory is flat as glass, whereas the same panel once it's been sanded or even stripped down to metal will never be as smooth again. Back when this car was new, I was a VW line mechanic. These cars had a fuel filter (see in the link below) in the discharge side of the fuel pump and part of a tune up was checking and cleaning this filter. In the early 70's replacement pumps started coming without the filter and they were a sealed unit so you couldn't rebuild them. VW issued a TSB about the new fuel pumps (which this car has) and the parts department issued plastic filters. Ironically about early 70's we started seeing engine fires and most of those fire either came from the carburetor pressed and epoxied in inlet tube or the fuel pump epoxied and pressed in discharged tube. This actually happened to me in my 64 deluxe whereby the discharge mild steel tube that was factory epoxied and pressed in at the factory after years of hot and cold cycles popped the tube out of the fuel pump and was squirting the engine bay like a rainbird sprinkler. luckily, I caught it in time before a fire. These days before I drive off, I always give a tug on loses and pipes. Also, another potential fire hazard is the hard fuel line going through the tin from the fuel pump back to the tunnel over the transaxle. The tin is the back sealing tin and the rubber gromet the hard line passes through gets hard and brittle and breaks apart leaving the fuel line to vibrate against the tin and cuts it in half=I had that happen to me on my 65 111. Fortunately, I caught that in time as well and I still have both cars going on 57 years for the 65 and 51years for the 64.
