Tires larger than 36 make too many gearing compromises and only help with speed on level ground. Any grade and you are downshifting so best to stick at 35-36\". You also lose important low range gearing with bigger tires. The bodies were replaced on the majority of them by the Swedish military in the late 90's but with the SAME METAL AND ALUMINUM combo that came stock. ;) I've had to correct this 100 times. There is no such thing as \"alumizinc\" or whatever the word is. I assume someone trying to sell some trucks made that term up long ago. The main difference in the newer bodies is the lower half and front panels, which are always steel, is better protected (zinc plated/lightly galvanized) than stock. The mid/rear top panels and upper side panels are aluminum, replaced or not. In fact many just had the steel parts replaced, with the alum kept in place if it wasn't dented up too badly. Use of aluminum was to save on weight. I agree with the fan mods recommended to reduce noise. Also the petrol powered 710 Pinzgauer is just as fast or faster than these, and the Pinz is definitely more nimble overall with the best turning radius of all. The C303 isn't bad though. The C303 is generally more capable off-road due to its stability and suspension flex but its little bit extra size and weight counter some of that. Top speeds are very close and somewhat subjective in both but if you like 65mph, skip both. The gearing works out to be about the same with both having final 1:1's. The \"Valp\" has nothing to do with the \"TGB\" or \"C303\" other than being its younger and heavier-duty replacement. They don't share parts and the Valp basically has an old Jeep driveline under it, with no portals or lockers, which are stock on all of these C303's. The VW Syncro isn't remotely in the neighborhood of the 4x4 class that these are, but are much more comfortable stock and obviously more highway capable. The C303 can be made very nice and quiet inside with professional help (I do this as a service occasionally). I'd recommend that this one be fully sanded down and professionally repaired by a real body shop pro experienced with resto work, meaning metal replacement, not bondo! Rust is the most serious issue with these overall. I'd also paint this one something lighter. First off make sure the brakes are in top notch condition as they can be finicky if they have been left without maintenance for any prolonged periods of time. They run a dual circuit system and can be a PITA to get sorted. Notoriously leaky vehicles also if not maintained but not terrible to work on. You will get conflicting data on highway speeds from all sorts of previous owners and experts. Many in Europe run larger tires on these and their 6x6 brothers without any real issues reported on wheel bearing failures, etc. Most of the kick back on this is personal opinion. As with any other vehicle larger tires affect gearing, etc. Lower gear ratios are available for the FD51 transfer case via Kamo Oko Vidi as well as Disc brake upgrades and higher ratio portal gears if you have the $$. Most B30 components can be had stateside but other TGB specific items will require you shopping Tatanka in Sweden or Claas in the Netherlands. More than likely a TGB will have less rust due to the body swap in the 1990's for better galvanized panels. A C303 is the civilian variety (sold to utilities companies, etc) and will more than likely have rust on the body. C303's have a notch under the driver side window so that is an easy way to tell which is which. They also have a notch under the middle doors but this cannot be seen due to the plates attached to the lower body (not factory). The body can be dismantled easily as most of it is panels the largest being the lower cab and the back cab if anyone were thinking of doing some proper body work on this. Electric fan conversion helps a ton with the noise as the old fan setup sounds like you are sitting on top of a grist mill. Also it makes it much easier to change belts and perform necessary maintenance without having the rod from the water pump to the forward fan sitting in your way.
