The lines of the downsized, crash- program Plymouths and Dodges were awkward, buyers flocked to larger offerings from the competition and sales were a disaster. IIRC, Virgil Exner was terminated from Chrysler and the thought was he was the scapegoat for the error. That said, this example is absolutely spectacular. The story as I heard it was it came from the 60s/70s Denver street racing scene having received a 426 Hemi from a barrel-rolled 67 or 68 GTX. It had headers and supposedly a blueprinted oil system and Kellog crank. I installed 73-76 A-body manual disk brakes, line lock and poly front end bushings for the second friend. How badly it needed those brakes can't be exaggerated! I declined several opportunities to own it as I was an Air Force NCO with young kids. Of course I didn\u2019t realize that as a kid; I just accepted the fact that they drove products made by the Chrysler Corporation and nobody else I knew did. Everyone else drove GM and Ford products. Not Art and Coila. Art and Coila drove Studebakers (preferably pink and white) until Studebaker no longer made full sized cars and then they migrated to Chrysler.\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s funny the things you remember from your childhood. I remember their cars always sounded different when they turned the key than anyone else\u2019s I heard. The turn signals always made a strangely different noise in Art and Coila\u2019s car than those in my parents\u2019 Chevys, Pontiacs, and Fords.\r\n\r\nBut what I remember most were the angles and edges that used to stick out from otherwise flat surfaces that (at the time) seemed to have no rhyme or reason. It was like George Jetson worked for Chrysler at the time, or near the end of the design process and said, \u201cWait guys, hold my beer and tell me what you think of this . . .\u201d And then took his grease pencil and went completely off the reservation. The rest of the designers looked at each other and said, \u201cWhy didn\u2019t we think of that.\u201d The reason, of course is that nobody else had consumed as many Hamm\u2019s beers as George had.\r\n\r\nArt and Coila drove home a new 1962 Dodge Polara 500 in 1962. Being more upmarket that Plymouth, it didn\u2019t wander as far off the reservation as this BAT listing, but it still made young me scratch my head and wonder just what automotive gods of the time had ordained this unholy combination of style and engineering. Surfaces that sloped in areas that should be flat. Flat areas that should have been rounded. Areas that just a couple years earlier contained fins reaching skyward were now flatter than the plains of Kansas. Headlights in both the fenders and the grill. Who does that?\r\n\r\nArt drove the beast for three years and then traded it in on new new 1965 Dodge Monaco because that\u2019s what you did during the LBJ administration. (Art was going doing his part for the Great Society. Coila just liked the vanity mirror on the passenger side visor.) The 1965 version was much more toned down (Chrysler had gone through a management crises and the designer of the 1961 Lincoln Continental had been hired away from Ford to take the reigns away from the George Jetsons who had been in charge of design for the past few years). The \u201865 Polar was very toned down, but still distinctly MoPar, starter, turn signals, and all.\r\n\r\nSeeing this \u201862 Fury created in me a much deeper appreciation for the ChryCo products of this era. The fact that Chrysler designers would even attempt some5ing so different from their contemporaries makes me respect just what they were attempting to do. The dashboard alone on this car, complete with the push-button Torque-Flight gear shifter deserves its own episode of Mad Men, not just residence in Art and Coila\u2019s garage.\r\n\r\nI literally like everything about this car now that I didn\u2019t understand when it was new. It\u2019s like the design team said, \u201cYou though the original Valiant was off the charts, get a load of this . . .\u201d The stones of these guys!\r\n\r\nI don\u2019t know if quirky Art and Coila bought their Polara because it allowed them to get their twilight years freak on or not. It may have just been that the Dodge dealer was a lot closer to their raised ranch house in Omaha than those of the \u201cmainstream\u201d dealers. They have been gone for decades, so there is no way to confirm their intentions. However, I\u2019ve driven nothing but Volvo\u2019s for my adult life, so I am more inclined to believe that some of that quirky DNA was passed down. In fall of 1963 I purchased a 63 Dodge 440 2 dr hdt. It had the same 330 hp 383 and three sped manual. It did had the pretty much standard equipment 3.23, non sure-grip rear end. It was the same power train that many state police Dodge and Plymouth squads had in 1963, including my home state of Wisconsin. It was ordered early in the model year before the T10 4 speeds became available. The owner ordered the equivalent 1964 model with the same engine and the new A833 4 speed. I actually drove it before the new car arrived and had the deal made Edwards Motor Cars about a month before the 1964 arrived.\r\nChrysler Corp. had a huge list of production line options and the 3.91 sure-grip 8/4 was one of them. IIRC they offered around 5 gear ratios as regular production options and many more from the Mopar counter. \r\nThere were two problems with the 3 speed; 1-no sure-grip and 2; Chrysler's unfortunate choice of using pin type synchronizers, which were subject to breakage in hard shifts. This was an all new trans introduced in either 1960 or 1961. While a lot stronger than previous with MUCH better ratio's, the syncro problem caused the Ram Chargers 1961 Dart with the solid lifter, long/short ram (basically the 60/61 extra cost 400 hp 300 engine) to lose to Don Nicholson in the SS final when the syncros failed.\r\nI fixed that by swapping in a Dana with sure-grip from a 1963 Dodge Super Stock. And the standard 3.91 gear was changed to a 4.56 by it's first owner, who did race it for a time. Actually, I would have preferred the 3.91 but beggars can't be choosers.
