I'm 6'5\" tall and fit fine. The later X1/9's are quite tight owning to a change in the seats and center console, but I found this comfortable at age 17. \r\n\r\nOne thing I noticed on this car are the two switches next to the gear lever. When I purchased my X, this was a blank panel. I put Lucas Square 8 fog lamps on my car between the front bumpers. They looked pretty much factory. In order to comply with PA law, I needed to have a light that showed they were on visible somewhere in the driver's line of sight. The dash had, pre-wired, a defroster light. That led me to track down the wiring to where the switch was to go. In the Clymer's book, the diagram showed a single switch for the rear defroster where I had a blank panel. Pulling off the panel revealed the wiring harness and even the fibre optic lighting connection to illuminate the switch. A dremel tool, a switch and bezel from the dealer, and a little soldering had my fog lights wired, and the defroster dash light made me legal. After it was done, I thought it looked goofy being one switch by itself, so I went back to the dealer and bought another bezel and another dome light switch (they did not offer me the ... switch shown), which I installed. I never did find out where the wiring harness to that switch went, and it wasn't in the Clymer's book so I connected up the fibre optic only.\r\n\r\nBack in the day, there was an armrest offered for the X. It was in my car when I bought it used. The armrest was so sturdy you could sit on it and look out over the windscreen. During the gas crisis in 1979, when you had to wait in line for an hour to buy gas, I found it quite nice to sit up there and look at my lime green X from above.\r\n\r\nThe first winter I had the car, I found that the outside vents are actually connected directly to the outside. This meant that if you left them open, you'd get a blast of artic air. The X's heater had incredible heat in the center of the car, so having them open meant you're be freezing on one side of your body and burning up on the other side. I've driven a couple of Ferrari 328's and I can tell you that X1/9's give you just about the same driving experience in a much cheaper although somewhat slower :( package.\r\nAnd they are reliable - other than routine maintenance, I've only ever had to replace the ignition switch (early in the car's life), one of the engine sensors (air flow or oxygen??), and the fuel pump (just recently). I can't say that about the GMC Jimmy we've owned since 2001.\r\nI only drive my car sparingly in the summer, but it sits garaged all winter and every spring I throw the battery in it and it fires right up. The biggest enemy of these cars is rust, but keep them out of the snow and salt and they will give you smiles for miles.\r\nFrom what I can see, if you're looking for a first gen X, you will have a hard time finding one that is in nicer shape that this one. And I was never a fan of the side stripe decals either! I wiped it and couldn't figure out what it was or where I might have picked it up. Upon leaving the office, I got into the X and proceeded to start my drive home. To get to the highway, I had to drive through an area called Powelton. The previous year, the Philadelphia Police had a shoot-out with a militant back-to-nature group called \"MOVE\" in this neighborhood. \r\n\r\nI began to notice that the clutch \"wasn't right\", but it was working so I continued driving. At the stop sign in front of the boarded up MOVE house, the clutch completely failed. No way was I going to get stuck there, in a flashy lime green car. I fought the car into gear, and then bang shifted until I hit the highway and safety. My X1/9 was exactly like this, same color and same year. And I also had a problem with my clutch leaking. At the time (in my early 20's) I wasn't particularly mechanically minded so I let it go. However, one night a buddy and I went to a local pub all dressed up in our work finery looking to meet up with some of the attractive members of the opposite sex. We were there and some of the ladies we were visiting decided late in the evening to go to another bar. I had some new light brown shoes that cost me a pretty penny so I put one flexible rubber boot (Totes) over my left shoe to protect it from the clutch fluid. Of course I took it off whenever I got out of the the car lest I look like the village idiot. So my friend and I got in the Fiat and took off after the ladies following them to the new hangout. As young foolish men do, I started hotdogging it up in the Fiat swerving to the left of them then to the right and so on trying to \"impress\" the ladies(?!?) To be clear, I hadn't been drinking anything stronger than soda that evening. I found that to be a wise thing to do when driving a sport car. As you might imagine, soon enough I saw flashing red lights in my rear view mirror. My first thought was \"Damn, we lost the ladies.\" Then the panic hit me...\"how was I going to get out of this.\" When the officer walked up to the the car, he said \"Son, you were swerving quite a bit, have you been drinking?\" I responded, \"No sir, (which was true) and then I fibbed, \"I thought I felt a tire going down and I was weaving to see if I could feel a change in handling due to the loss of air in one tire\". He looked at me with disbelief and then asked me to get out of the car. When I did, he eyes immediately went to...you guessed it, my left foot. \"Sir,\" he said. \"Why do you have a rubber boot on one shoe and none on the other?\". I explained about the clutch leaking and my expensive new shoes and my using the \"rubber\" for protection. (No pun intended). He said \"You have all the signs of being drunk but your reasoning is so clear that no drunk could ever come up with a story like that. Get out of here and get that clutch fixed. Driving out by the steam plant, with one headlight, a few over the speed limit and the Ansa system doing it's job, I passed a state trooper. He pulled me over, and after assuring I was upstanding, he told me to fix the headlight and keep an eye on the speedometer. \"Yes sir\". He left, by saying, by the way, we are doing DUI patrols tonight, we're looking for any reason to pull people over. Sure enough, 5 miles later a sheriff pulls me over. Same drill, fix the headlight, have a good night. Well further up the road, i braked for a corner and the ignition cut out. I thought thats no good, is there something loose or an electrical fault. More brake tapping, switching lights and accessories on and off, darting left and right in the lane to try and make something jiggle. Ignition didn't cut out again, but all the braking and flashing and veering caught the attention of ANOTHER state trooper behind me. Pulled over for the 3rd time in 20 minutes. He walked to the car and said \"son, you have been pulled over twice already! What is with the blinking and swerving?!\" I explained the mystery ignition fault , to which he replied \"I think its time you took this home for the night\" In the midst of that sentence, a drunk in an El Camino blew the red light just ahead of me at 2x the speed limit.
