All said, add a nice drop with a sporty suspension and suddenly it looks amazingly sleek and athletic. I was shocked when i saw a really nice example with a drop, not slammed and on stk wheels that i had to double check it was a TL. I think this because it was still designed in the 90s back when low rooflines and cowls were still acceptable, not by nsx standards but a low swoopy roof line by modern standards. Add to that overall dimensions are quite tidy so this can be a real head turner if done right. If the reserve is not ridiculous could be a great buy on bulletproof old school acura. It had 214K miles with just tires and brakes, normal maintenance including timing belts, suspension parts replaced around 140 - 160k, and a transmission replaced under a recall. Quick for its time, attractive, very comfortable, and reliable. It was running and driving fine with everything working perfectly when I traded it because it was beginning to rust in a couple easy to see places and I was concerned about places I couldn't see. The problem with this is that you have sunk allot more money into a rebuilt transmission that will fail again. Its performance value is stratospheric, but it's long term reliability...well, read the comments. These and the TL Type S were insane performers for the time; super powerful with brilliant handling. Burned CDs got stuck in the six disc in-dash all the time and the units had to come out because of it. The SportShift made me remember my first Accord, with its 'Hondamatic' two-speed transmission. Honda has never convinced me that they ever really sorted out the automatic transmission. We had one technician assigned solely to swapping out transmissions in the 2000-2003 CL and TL models. He got it down to two hours and a half, with programming. People loved them. One customer had her transmission changed out six times under the extended warranty. She didn't care. She loved the car. Is there anything you can do to beat the failure? Nothing I ever heard of. However, some of these cars lasted a very, very long time with no problems. Talk to an automotive engineer, or a transmission shop owner/manager (I did that, too, for a little while.) Some of these folks will recommend different fluids, different filters, increased maintenance cycles. We put 370,000 miles on a 93 Legend before selling it to the guy that's still driving it. Then again, it wasn't built in Marysville, OH (with the Honda Accord), it was built in Japan. TBH, my daughter's 99 Camry V6 can pace a 3.2 CL/TL, but it's nowhere near as elegant or fun to drive. If you want this for yourself, buy low and set aside the dough. Drive it easy, gently, and take some maintenance advice: service the transmission frequently. Silver over black, spoiler and navigation. I added Comptech sway bars...huge improvement. One of the best/favorite cars I have ever had. When VTEC kicks in, this motor absolutely sings. Great power delivery and descriptively quick. Comfortable on the highway, 30+ mpg. Mine too had transmission issues. First time it was serviced (not replaced) under the recall/extended warranty. The second time it started acting up was past the recall expiration, so I traded in for a new 2009 WRX. In hindsight, i should have found an 03 with a 6 speed - no transmission issues there. :)\r\n\r\nMy father-in-law was the Parts Dept Manager for many years at a large Acura dealer. He had an 03 CL S 6 speed as a demo for ~18 months...he says that car is still his favorite of all time (he had all sorts of cool Acuras over the years including Integra GSRs, RSX Type S, 08 TL Type S, etc).\r\n\r\nIts a shame Honda never created a trans fix..otherwise this is an excellent example of a very great car.
