Sold it in the fall of '15 after several years. I bought it from the estate of the original owner (and I stupidly passed on a perfect '71 Riviera that they were also selling) in (I think) 2011. I traded it with cash for a car that I still own today and I've missed this car. \n\nHere are my notes on the car (i hope helpful) from when I had decided to sell it:\n\n\"The original buyer ordered the car from the Hartford CT Cadillac dealer in November of 1967. He took delivery several weeks later and drove the car for three years until he bought a brand new boattail riviera. (Clearly this guy liked ACD cars\u2026) His family estimated that he drove this car about 45,000 miles over a little more than three years and then parked it to use as his weekend car. Over the ensuing 40 years, he drove this car only 30,000 additional miles. The car looks and drives every bit of this. \n\nThe car has no accident or rust history whatsoever but as the paint and top aged, the owner brought it in for a very high quality repaint and replacement vinyl roof all done in the same factory colors. Both were done to standards reserved for high-dollar collectible cars. They are just about without flaw (I couldn't find any).\n\nThe family also maintained this car mechanically as well with my only noted issues being the factory clock having stopped and the gas gauge occasionally fluctuating right upon starting. \n\nThe underside is perfect with not even surface rust present. The windows go up and down without issue, The car starts easily and drives comfortably on Good Year Double Eagle tires that appear to be new with the original rally hub caps.\n\nEven in the door jambs, the original spot weld marks are clearly visible. The car has no needs and could be shown at a very high level with only a very minor engine detail.\n\nI doubt you will ever find a better front drive eldo that has not been frame-off restored.\"\n\nWonderful car. I will have to ponder bidding. As an earlier owner of a fine 68, I can pinpoint out a few of the mechanicals you need to weigh. The front disc brake rotors and calipers are a two year only run and the parts are near unobtainum! Many have converted the spindles to the 69 which allows more modern parts to be used. \nThe rear airshocks from the factory as well as the single leaf springs are usually needing to be replaced with a 3 leaf type due to sagging of the original leaf. The cylinder shaped air pump under the hood on the cross support rod also fails trying to maintain rear ride height (275 psi folks to the shocks where the pressure is stepped down) The Billy - Bob fix is to add manual airshocks with a schrader valve by the gas filler. Hopefully the Climate Control works as this was also a trouble spot for mine and I never did get it working as it should. There is a rotary A/C Vacumn valve under the hood on the firewall that can be the root cause though. Finally the nylon timing chain gears on the 472 engine most always need replacing! Its an engine out job though! Ask me how I know. With all the above in mind, this car is a beauty! I wouldn't expect this from GM Design, which was very, very attentive to design details like this. So you add a little bit of positive crown, like maybe a quarter inch, to the upper line and a little bit of negative crown to the lower line. When it was cleaned up that car was spectacular - all of my friends wanted to ride in it if I was driving it somewhere. Very fast, at least in a straight line! Cadillac did offer a split bench in 1968 - Dad's car had one - the seat base was a true split bench with six-way power on both sides. The backrests were similar to the factory bucket backrests, with a large fold-down armrest in the middle. Also the hood ornament - most that you see with the stand-up hood ornament were dealer installed - my guess is that Bill Mitchell would not have approved of double crests so close together. But it is possible that was a factory option though I doubt it. \r\nI'm remembering the whitewalls that the car came with being a little thinner, but at some point Dad's definitely had this width of whitewall tire on it as well. So these are at least period correct if not perfectly factory authentic. Possibly one of the best looking cars ever made. However, I'll limit myself to one recommendation: Install a dual-exhaust system (assuming that this car isn't being purchased for exhibition in a museum).\r\n\r\nIf you're lucky, the extant pipes running back to the muffler are still in good shape and can be reused.\r\n\r\nThe only issue this mod faces is that the ride-leveling sensor is located on the passenger-side top of the rear axle, where you'll probably want to route an exhaust pipe. In my case, I removed the ride-leveling system and \"Toronado-ized\" the rear suspension with load-boosting coil-over rear shocks. (My aged leaf springs needed some help as well.) However, I think your exhaust person could probably be creative enough to preserve the sensor while routing new plumbing if suitably motivated.\r\n\r\nI made that change on my '67 (with the 429 cu-in engine) and I picked up 2 MPG. It was the halo product for the world's largest corporation (GM) in 1967: The pinnacle of automotive engineering.\r\n\r\nWhy they don't command more respect these days is, I suppose, a function of (a lack of) nostalgia. Old Boomers have fond memories related to Chevelles or GTOs or Mustangs of that period because those lower-end products were so ubiquitous. Only the Rat Pack and Elvis were able to afford the limited number of Eldorados produced in 1967 and 1968. The general public could only regard the regal Eldorado at a distance.\r\n\r\nNowadays, Eldos do have the drawbacks of being very thirsty, very complex, and very difficult to find (some) parts for. As an owner of a '67, I have it worse than the '68 crowd, but not by a huge amount.\r\n\r\nPrices on the first-gen Riviera (particularly the '65) are booming these days. That's interesting to watch because the Riviera was essentially a design study for the Eldorado.
