Nearly all the work was performed by the prior owner who I purchased the car from a year ago. I\u2019ve always wanted a first-gen big block 4-speed Cougar, and didn\u2019t anticipate selling so soon, but an opportunity for another bucket list car came my way and I don\u2019t have room for both. That car is a \u201965 Cyclone (4-speed) with nice original paint. Perhaps some of you might be able to understand.\r\n\r\nAs the Marti Report explains, this car is 1 of 905 \u201967 Cougar XR7s built with a 390 and 4-speed. It appears much as it did when new, with original colors and a stock appearing drivetrain.\r\n\r\nThe two-stage PPG finish was done five years ago by a professional shop that specialized in classic T-birds, and you can see some of the \u201cas bought by the prior owner in primer\u201d and \u201cin process\u201d images I obtained from him. That owner told me that one of the front fenders was replaced at the body shop with a nice original fender due to some damage. Door gaps are nice, and the trim and chrome is equally sharp. Regarding that trim and chrome, I\u2019m not sure what has been replaced with repop vs. NOS vs. refinished/rechromed original. \r\n\r\nThe engine and trans are not original to the car, with the engine block having a \u201968 date code. The Toploader 4-speed has the VIN stamp for a \u201967 S-code Mustang fastback, so I believe it is the same wide ratio unit as the original, other than that stamping. The prior owner explained that all the mechanical systems were rebuilt, to include engine, transmission, rearend, suspension, brakes, etc. He said he had all the receipts at another location and would send them to me, but then he could never locate them. Visual inspection gives me no reason to doubt what he said, as there are many many new and refinished parts throughout, and the car runs and shifts very well, however I don\u2019t have proof of the work done. \r\n\r\nI\u2019ll point out perceived negatives first. While most things function properly, to include the headlights, turn signals (solid state), dash toggles, gauges, clock, speedo, tach, etc ., there are a few items that could be chased down. The radio knobs don\u2019t seem to fit quite right, and the heater fan motor recently stopped working. The prior owner told me that the left rear quarter window doesn\u2019t roll down, but I\u2019ve never tested it. The power steering pump has a light whine. The clutch works well, but I can hear a faint whirring sound when the car is running in the driveway in neutral and the clutch is out. The noise is eliminated by pulling the clutch pedal up against the travel stop with your toe, where it will stay when you take your foot away. There are some surface irregularities on the horizontal area of the fender aprons where the front fenders bolt on, which I\u2019ve documented in the photos. I\u2019m thinking this may indicate some collision damage in the past, but fortunately both fender aprons appear original to the car as I can see the VIN on both passenger and driver sides from underneath - also shown in the pictures. There is no evidence of rust in this historically rust prone area either. A couple non-stock weld beads can be seen where the factory joints of the apron sheetmetal overlap each other near both underhood shock towers, and I\u2019ve taken detailed photos of this. I can only guess this was done a long time ago in an effort to strengthen the front end of a big block 4-speed car, though I doubt it helps, and I\u2019m sure this could be cleaned up to look stock if you wanted to put in the effort. The engine compartment was painted at some point in the past, but doesn\u2019t look as fresh as the exterior. That said, you won\u2019t be embarrassed to raise the hood at a show or cruise night, as the engine compartment is clean, and the 390 has a nice original look that includes the proper \u201967 390 air cleaner. The car was undercoated by the shop that did the paint work, I would guess as an inexpensive way of making the bottom of the car look consistent and \u201cfinished\u201d. I understand people would prefer to see no undercoating to get a better look at the metal, and so would I. However I see no evidence of rust or floorpan replacement. The car spent its early years in Western Oregon and Western Washington, neither of which experience harsh winters or salted roads. Later years were spent in dry Eastern Washington, and I think much of this was in storage as a project in waiting. The rear window has a few light scratches and a couple of small marks I\u2019ve attempted to show in pictures. The bottom line here is that this is a 55 year old car, and it has a number of small flaws. It has not been restored to show car status, rather I\u2019d say it\u2019s been freshened everywhere to a very clean and beautiful driver quality condition.\r\n\r\nAnd now for the good. Well, this Cougar is rare and absolutely gorgeous. While the paint was done in 2018 in the original Sage Gold (Ford called it Sauterne Gold), it looks like it was just finished yesterday. It has a beautiful shine with absolutely no chips, scratches, touch-ups, bubbles, dings, dents, etc. I said earlier that the car is of beautiful driver quality, but if my show car had this paintjob on it, I\u2019d be super happy. Obviously the car has been driven very few miles since completion, and has been garage kept. The engine starts easily whether hot or cold, and when cold the choke high idle works as designed. The smooth idle implies a stock engine rebuild. The prior owner stated the transmission and rearend were also rebuilt, with the rear getting 3.50 gears and a Traction-Lok dif.\r\n\r\nThe interior is nice, with upholstery, headliner, carpet, and door panels all in great shape. This one originally had leather seats, but stock Cougar vinyl was used when reupholstered. The rare floor console also presents nice other than a small cigarette burn shown in photos. The dashpad looks original and has a bit of separation on the bottom near the glovebox as shown in photos. The dash panel does not look to have ever been apart, and would benefit from rechroming/refinishing if you really wanted to make it pop.\r\n\r\nNew items in the year I have owned the Cougar are new Legendary Magstar 15x7-inch wheels with BFG Radial TAs, new battery, new heater core, and a recent oil change. I always loved the look of the Magstars as run by the 1967 Bud Moore Cougar Trans Am team, and in this instance feel they nicely set off the black vinyl top. The Marti report shows this car was originally equipped with wire hubcaps, and I\u2019m including the very nice set of four that were on the car when I bought it. I\u2019ll do my best to answer any additional questions that weren\u2019t answered here. Yes, the Cougar does have its XR7 overhead console, and I will add a couple of pictures of it later today. The map lights in the overhead console definitely work, activated by two of the four toggles on the dash you mentioned. The other two toggles function normally as well. I'm not certain about the four warning lights on the overhead console, which I'm told were for low fuel, seatbelts, door ajar, and parking brake. I will check them out today. As for the carburetor, it is correct for this application - 1967 S-code 390/4-spd. The 4-barrel S-code engine was the only 390 available in Cougar/Mustang for 1967, and is sometimes referrred to as the 390GT engine. All S-code Cougars/Mustangs got a factory Holley 600cfm carb with vacuum secondaries, in this case the correct 4-spd carb is denoted by the Ford number C7OF-9510-A on the choke airhorn, shown in pitures. Likewise the Autolite tag is correct, and often goes missing during rebuilds. So the carburetor is correct for the car, with all the attaching choke hardware, but I don't believe it is the original carb, which probably went away with the original engine. The chokehorn shows this carb was manufactured in October of 1966, which would seem early for this car's June 1967 build. These carbs were automatic choke, and this one functions very well. There is no manual choke knob in the car, perhaps you're seeing the driver side cold air vent knob. Regarding photo 136, I would concur that it looks like there has been some repair work done here. I have no idea why or when, but agree it was finished to something less than the factory standard. It's one reason I call this car a beautiful driver rather than a show car, as that repair would appear to fall under the \"returned to functionality\" status rather than a \"returned to original\" status. I will point you to picture 180 for a view of this area from the bottom side - inside the driver's wheelwell. Note the location of the two \"Vs\" in the sheetmetal and the hood hinge bolts as reference. I see no sign of rust or major repair present here, which is obviously a good sign. Lastly about the windshield washer bottle. Much like the overhead console, it's one of those out of sight, out of mind things. The car has only been driven in good weather since being painted, and I guess nobody ever had the need to use the windshield washer. I'll check that later today with the overhead console and report back. Also since we've discussed one of the wheelwell pictures, I'm aware these can be somewhat disorienting. For clarification, photos from the wheelwell that show the inner aprons with the original VIN stamping, include 179 and 210 for the passenger side, and 175 and 211 for the driver side. No idea what made these marks, or when, actually there are a couple on the driver front wing window that I can now see in picture 49 that I should have also mentioned. 67 could have been something like a grinder or sander briefly touching the glass during body/paint work, and yet with the vinyl top that seems kind of unlikely. \r\nI've found marks on the glass are kind of weird because some angles of the camera they just aren't visible, but the pictures mentioned show them the best.
