Also I did not clean the engine compartment simply cause I as a buyer like to see the dust and grime on an engine cause it helps to show nobody has been messing with stuff or making repairs. That just my personal view. I also did not have to charge the ac and it cools 44 vent temp. Everything works as it should even the heated seats. Also they stepped up the rods to 13mm opposed to the earlier 9mm. These engines typically in the turbo line at this year range all had oil squirters. I have seen inside of many non turbo early and late models. I have seen some in this year range with and some with out the squirters in non turbos. Some will argue they all were or they all weren\u2019t etc. I have worked on these cars for 25 years and seen both. The L blocks also were not prone to piston slap. I have 3 other 940 turbo engines and one has 450k and just starting to have some slap. The L block in the 92-95 year range for the US is the superior of the B230\u2019s from my experience. The later blocks also have larger bearings and crank journals than the earlier \u201clow friction\u201d engines as Volvo had labeled them in some publications. Hopefully someone else will correct or confirm this, but those engines have Bosch control systems. Since this car has the French Regina/Rex controls I suspect that it is just a standard engine. The distributor location may be a clue. Regarding the main bearing thrust location, the very early version of the 230 \u201c Low Friction \u201c engine has separate thrust washers that aren\u2019t attached to the bearing cap. Yes around 92 they went full electric on turbo and non turbo cars. Also has a larger radiator and can even be upgraded to the drop in turbo car radiator which holds a little more coolant. The combination of the larger ac condenser for the the newer at the time R 134a refrigerant and the newer style ac compressor gave these cars a much needed air conditioning upgrade. The electric fans were much more reliable than the viscous hydraulic fan clutches on the older cars. As far as you being on the opposite side of the country I can assist if you wish to have it shipped. I shipped a V8 swapped 740 known as the \u201cone lap of America Volvo 740\u201d to California about 15 years ago and last year we sold our C5 corvette to someone in Arizona. Also @Old_Ned is correct this car has the Regina system and the best part about that is it utilizes a map sensor in place of the Bosch air flow sensor and is much more reliable in my opinion for that fact. Do either of you have an oil brand preference? Next up, transmission service. My last 240 was a 1993 purchased at 119K miles. There was documentation of a couple of prior fluid changes in the 10 years prior to my ownership. I decided to drain the fluid, which was black but didn't smell \"bad\". I measured what I removed minus a few oz (since I like to drain hot but refill with whatever ambient temp is). I noticed a slip the first few feet forward, but then never again. I proceeded then to do several drain & fills over that first summer I owned the car. These are as simple and straight forward as it comes and you will find that across the board of Volvo owners in this year range including the older 7,9and 240 series. They feature a non interference engine meaning in the even the belt breaks nothing gets damaged internally. The oil recommendations from me is in my experience these engines truly don\u2019t care if you buy 5w30 all the way up to 15w40. I have 10w30 in this car but my turbo cars I run 15w40. These engines last forever as long as they have oil period. There are no small passages or newer technology variable timing components so I would say 10w30 /10w40 would be my ideal. As far as trans service today\u2019s standards have come down to drain and fills only unless the vehicle was flushed regularly since new. Time has shown that the drain and fill gives some benefit to having some new fluid added but also have benefit to the old fluid having some slight mixture of any materials. I don\u2019t recommend a flush with all new fluid totally. The transmission in these are also bullet proof. They were used in the Toyota pick up trucks also back in the day. As well as behind the V6 cars. Of course they had different bell housings and stuff but the overall trans itself is the same. In my life I have replaced one that was bad and it was a car I dragged raced often and was internally modified and seen daily abuse of 15 pounds of boost. The later ones have a drain plug in the pan. Previously, to drain them, you had to remove the dipstick tube. \r\nThe factory supplied drain plug washer is a crush style washer and the plug needs to be over tightened to get it to seal. Eventually, it will strip out the threads in the pan. Flushing with a machine is not detrimental but gets expensive if you do it every 40k miles per service instructions.
