I purchased a 1999 CL600 a couple years ago from a MBCA old-timer and have been working through all systems. Had it painted last year at Vin Devers and some light bodywork. They did a fabulous job. Monoblocs and Michelins - check. \n\nI\u2019m now moving through the mechanicals as time/money allows. The V12 coupe is enjoyable in a more personalized sense compared to my 97\u2019 S600 sedan. It\u2019s nearly as long but feels much more agile with that pillar-less visibility. The M120 V12 is such a smooth operator. I have a SL600 as well. With what Mercedes is building now a 40-year-old guy such as myself has nothing to aspire to, yet only to embrace their final years of design and engineering excellence in the 600\u2019s. \n\n If you have the means and the time any 90s 600 is a worthy endeavor especially the later ones. Trust me, the single-biggest hassle of the $20k (wholesale, 2017-19 prices) was re-doing my shredded front seats. \n\nEvery usual suspect I called who has been doing MB leather for years was just so certain they had what I needed. GAHH couldn't even help me. NONE of any companys' mail-order samples were close. Ultimately, to get the CORRECT grain (basically, none) and thickness (or, thin-ness?) John at German Auto Tops in Hollywood, CA sourced me 2 dyed hides from Germany, uncut. After consulting with interior shops in my area, and John, his suggestion was to order 2 in a shade slightly lighter than the factory color. His shop used a template for the S600 coupe seats to cut and stitch the kit before shipping, whereby I planned to get them dyed once here. Well, even his template (probably for a 92-95) wasn't 100%. So the shop that recovered my seats had to undo and redo the seams on the seatbacks to let them loose a little bit so they could fit. Luckily, John sent the remainder of the raw hide which was needed. Then, after matching my good rear seats with a spectrometer, it took 3 runs to get the color right. There initially was too much gray and not enough blue - and to be clear, I have \"exclusive gray,\" this car is \"exclusive black.\" \n\n$2200 later it looks like a million bucks. That would cost probably $4k in today's money. It wasn't even the money - the amount of time I spent on it was enormous. Took the balance of all of 2017 to go from A to Z. Also, you won't be able to re-dye the center armrest - I tried, twice. It will look good for 6 months and then peel again. You can't get these anymore, either.\n\nI would fix the mechanicals and leave the rest as-is. This is a baby with 100k. Mine just ticked 200k last month. All I've done is replace coils in 2017 ($350 off eBay), a valve cover gasket set, and a couple of intake elbows and vacuum lines. The internals are as good as you can get. At 200k, mine feels like it has the guts to hit 400k - but that will likely be long after I'm gone, driving 2k a year. \n\nBuy this car and forget about the cosmetics. Change all the fluids (including diff and trans if hasn't been done), and roll with it.\n\nLike @stathios said, stock radios are everywhere. I use a Pioneer DEX P99RS, top of the line 2011 display model I bought years ago that is effectively a plug-and-play \"upgrade\" with the Bose system, looks as factory as you can get (knobs!) and no cutting.
