This '54 Olds is as close as you can get to being a sister to my car. I think the body and roof lines of mid-50's GM 2 dr. post sedans are amongst the best ever offered by a domestic automaker. These cars are capable of passing contemporary cars on the highway. My car gets a lot of appreciation at car shows because it is such a great simple design and emblematic of the early V-8 age. The neighbor had two of these in his garage, and over the course of about three months he was taking the engine out of the sedan and putting it in the convertible. I can't recall his reasons why, although he told me all about it since I would come into his garage and watch him sweat and grunt and then move the engine an inch or two, swear and then do something else. \r\nSometimes his son, who was a year younger would come in the garage and ask me to play with him, and sometimes I would. Something about what his dad was doing was way more interesting. \r\nEventually the sedan disappeared and for several more months the convertible was sitting there, while he did small things in and around the cavern that was the engine bay. \r\nOne day, walking home from school, the dad drove the convertible by and gave me a salute style wave, top down, huge grin on his face. \r\nThe next day, when I got done with whatever my mom made me do after school, I went next door. The garage was empty. The convertible was not in sight. I went and asked the wife/mom about it. Turns out dad had not come back the night before, and she was smiling when she told me. Apparently this joy ride lasted about a week, and ended with some sort of transaction, for while the man returned, the car did not. \r\nMost of my 'motorhead' interest up to this incident was concerned with how cars looked, the colors, the styles the fins. Thanks to my neighbor, it matured into the smells and mysteries of what goes on in places you have to look. Good to see the interest going on here.
