The consumer Dino V6 iron block was cast in Torino by Fiat, then either finished in-house for the Fiat cars or shipped to Maranello for finish for the Ferrari cars (this seems to have evolved over the years to more finish-work at Maranello as Fiat was unable produce). The Fiat Dino body/chassis was assembled in Torino until late 1969 or 1970 when the convertible version moved to the Ferrari assembly line. And yes, the reason they shared the engine was to meet homologation for the F2 V6 circuit (500 retail units I believe), but that engine was an aluminum block (by Ferrari) version in 3 and then 4 valve versions. His thought process was sound, build a cheaper, lower priced sports car that would be like a Ferrari but for less money and go head to head against Porsche's 911.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, he had his people build a pure show car in all alloy with totally show car features that were ultra expensive for a production vehicle. By the time he had built 100 of them, he was on the ropes and FIAT had to step in before the company folded. Every 206GT was sold for roughly 1/2 what it cost to build.\r\n\r\nAfter FIAT took over and after the parts and bodies on hand were used up a total of 151 had been built. They are the very last, custom-coachwork, alloy-bodied, hand assembled Ferraris from the Enzo era.\r\n\r\nThe 246GT from the L to M to final E models were all far more production oriented and they were built in the several thousand unit range. The original GT version, based on the original 206GT is just pure sex on wheels. Low, curvy and begging to be entered! The GTS was an afterthought and essentially a copy of Porsches 911 Targa variant. The Targa was far more popular in the States than the rest of the world and until about five or six years ago, was what all the collectors wanted. Most recently we have seen a huge swing of all things being equal a parity of value between the GT and the GTS.\r\n\r\nAs far as driving goes, the 206GT is pure show car, essentiality based on an F2 engine in a super lightweight, low center of gravity road car body. It is pure sex on wheels with a rev happy engine that never quits and braking and handling that are other-worldly. Body number 2801 is probably for a much later chassis number. Lap belt only U.S. spec cars must be very rare - my U.S. spec Dinos - my GT and and my GTS, both had the shoulder belt systems, as did your U.S. spec GT did when I drove it, and I have NEVER seen an original U.S. spec Dino with lap belts only, either GT or GTS, but certainly there must be one or two out there, but this Dino at auction is not one of those. The only U.S. spec Dinos that I have seen that only had lap belts were ones where the shoulder harnesses had either been removed because they were damaged, or they had been misplaced during restoration or related work.\r\n\r\nIn the photo taken with the door open from the passenger side of this Dino, you can see the male lap belt portion protruding from the seat belt retractor. The hole near the tip latches into the female receptacle.
