After the first Corniche RR designated later models as II, III, and IV, but for who know what reason departed from that nomenclature with the last of the series. I'll repeat below a post I made on another beautiful Corniche regarding the problems one can expect with the roofs of these models. BTW, I was able to get my Azure's roof fixed for \"only\" $7700, though it took months for my independent to get the needed parts and make the repairs.\r\n ***************************\r\nThis Corniche is a beauty, and if I didn\u2019t already have two RRs and an Azure plus more other cars than I have time to drive or space to keep them, I\u2019d be at my computer with my finger poised during the last minutes of the auction.\r\nOne thing a buyer needs to be aware of, though, is that these convertibles have a serious design flaw in how the top functions. My 2000 Azure has been at my mechanic\u2019s for months having that problem fixed. When I bought the car on BaT the top worked fine, until it didn\u2019t go up when I stopped at the grocery. The problem was that the hydraulic lines had corroded with time to the point that they would no longer operate the mechanism. Replacing them is a job for someone well versed in the upkeep of these cars, and such people are not always easy to find\r\nThe article with the link below by John Robison describes these problems. He\u2019s a well known authority on Rolls and Bentleys and has written similar articles recently in the RROC magazine \u201cFlying Lady.\u201d He notes that the top mechanism in these years was copied from the Mercedes 500SL, a much smaller car. Ironically, I have a 2007 550SL and the top works like a charm. It just wasn\u2019t well designed for the much larger Corniches and Azures.\r\nIf you have access to the RROC\u2019s magazine, there are several articles by Robison on the various generations of the Corniche in the 4th magazine from 2022. (It\u2019s published every other month). The one covering the Corniche IV made from 1992-1995 notes that the hydraulic pressure needed to operate those tops is 10 times higher than it was in earlier versions. \u201cThe fully automatic tops are nice to look at and use, but repair is far more frequent [than in the previous cars]. Many Corniche cars from the 1970s are still in service with original hydraulic components. Few 1995 cars have been as durable.\u201d The article adds that the series IV Corniches are much in demand even though, \u201cRepairs to a Corniche convertible top system can cost $20,000, but with most examples selling for $200,000 or more, that\u2019s not that big a deal for most buyers.\u201d\r\nI don\u2019t mean at all to throw cold water on this car, just that whoever buys it should know going in about possible work that might need to be done sooner or later after he buys it. Of course, we had to have the whole mechanism repaired, with all 26 hoses replaced with better-than-new components. In addition, other pieces were sent to England to be rebuilt. I envy trailortory47 in that he only paid $7700\u2026 for us it was $12K. And the stain on the tan top will not come out, sadly. This is a real problem with these cars. I hope the buyer takes this beautiful auto somewhere that can work on the top mechanism, perhaps preventively taking care of this issue before risking damage to the top fabric itself.
