They weren't as cool as some of the stuff from the 70's but they at least were trying. Now Buick is little but captive imports on life support, Pontiac and Oldsmobie are gone and the rest of GM is SUV only. There isn't anything left but trucks and SUV's from Ford and Chrysler (except the pony cars and the Charger\\300). Back in the day the GS was rumored to have a hotter factory cam but I don't believe it really did; the idle was the same and the performance difference was due to the rear end. I worked on these Rivera's when they were new. The 1966 Riviera is one of my favorite Buick's after the 1967 Wildcat. I purchased a 1967 Buick Wildcat Custom 2 door hardtop new the Spring of 1967. I ordered it in black with red pinstripes down the sides, factory chrome wheels and the custom trim black bucket seat interior. I still have the Wildcat and it already has 40,000 original miles. Back to my second favorite Buick, my 1966 (non GS) Riviera. I purchased it from it's original owner who only used it while wintering in Miami. It is a loaded vehicle. It is white with the plum cloth interior. Mine has the custom (deluxe) strato bench seat. It was a northern vehicle and came with a posi-traction differential in the standard 3.08 ratio. I still have it and it has 29,000 original miles.\n\nThis 1966 Riviera looks good in the pictures but as any 53 year old vehicle that has survived x number of owners and was probably worked on by mechanics that specialized in ALL makes and models of motor vehicles, it seems that it survived in rather good shape. I do not want to knock this Riviera but I would like the bidders and future owner to understand some of it's issues, most minor. I would also like to say that the only difference between the non GS and GS Rivera's is the GS emblems on the front fenders and glove box, the engine dress-up kit, the standard equipped posi-traction differential in 3.42 ratio and the wood rim steering wheel. If this one has the 3.42 ratio differential with posi-traction, I would guess it is a GS. Otherwise not.\n\nThe main issue I have is when the vehicle was repainted, the part of the trunk lid below the chrome molding should be silver (like the taillight surrounds) not the body color. The chrome wheels may be off a 1968 or later Buick because the painted area of the wheels should be gray, not black. 1968 was the first year they were black on the full size Buick's. The front fender emblems seem to be in their proper location. As someone else stated they were centered between the front wheel opening and door is wrong. The Riviera script is closer to the door on the right side and a little closer to the door then center on the left side. I went out and checked my 1966 Riviera and know both of my front fenders are original with the factory holes for the Riviera emblems. The GS emblems were add to original fenders. The 1966 and 1967 Rivieras use the same front fenders and they did not have different replacement fenders for the GS. The 1967 GS emblem is different then the 1966.\n\nGoing under the hood, the AC compressor was either changed or the pulley was changed. The factory AC equipped nail head Buick's have a two groove pulley on the AC compressor, alternator, water pump/fan and crankshaft. The water pump/fan and crankshaft pulley's have three grooves with power steering. The top of the air cleaner should be chrome (not red) with the red stick on emblem.\n\nIt is nice to see the exhaust is properly routed but is missing the resonators at the rear. I do like the turned down ends. They look like the originals did. Oil leaks are expected on a vehicle this age. They can be repaired.\n\nThe 1966 Riviera is a wonderful vehicle to drive. When right, it is smooth and quiet. Fast for its time. And those wonderful 12 inch brakes. I love mine and if someone was willing to correct issues on this one they would be a happy camper. They always draw a crowd and the plum color (I could be wrong but I believe that this color was ONLY available on the Riviera) on this one really works well with the style and presence of this era of the Riviera. The nice thing is that the new owner will probably be the only kid in town with a car that looks as nice as this and with this color. These are wonderful road cars and surprisingly nimble and quick for a car of this size. I've even managed to get 19 MPG in mine at 70 MPH on a recent 300 mile trip.\r\n\r\nThe 425 was a fantastic, trouble-free engine that had no problem pushing these 2 ton + behemoths down the road. And the transmission is not just a run-of-the-mill Turbo 400, but was specifically designed by Buick engineering to maximize the efficiency and performance of their full-size cars.\r\n\r\nFor the most part, these cars require very little care and while people express concern over the apparent leaks and the carrier bearing, the car is 53 years old and anyone who owns and drives old cars know, they do require periodic maintenance. Parts are readily available through many sources and the Buick Club of America and the Riviera Owners Association are great resources for technical assistance and vendors supporting the marque.\r\n\r\nI'm thinking a selling price in the mid-teens is probably appropriate. The transmission in the 1966 Riviera is a ST400 (Super Turbine 400). Buick division designed, developed and manufactured the ST400. It replaced the Dynaflow in the upper series Buick's beginning in the 1964 model year. The 1964 ST400 was a one year only transmission that was a three speed but only showed Low and Drive on the gear shift selector. The valve body (and case) was redesigned for the 1965 model year. It had the Low 1, Low 2 and Drive indicated on the gear shift selector. The 1965's also had a variable pitch stator in the converter. The variable pitch stator was kept thru the 1967 model year. It was discontinued for the 1968 model year. I can't remember the exact year but in the late 1960's GM took the manufacturing of the 400 transmission away from Buick division and gave it to Hydramatic division of GM. I am a very big fan of Michelin's and have not been able to find 15 inch white walls. They have not made them for many years.
