I love this site, just when you think \"Oh wow, a manual transmission XJS coupe just sold on BaT\" another one pops up. I think it's really interesting that it's an actual Euro-spec car as a handful of these were sold in the US by Jaguar NA in the 80s but they were originally company service vehicles. As i have said before the AJ6 is a fantastic engine and they can take incredibly high mileage without breaking a sweat. Head gasket replacement I would almost guarantee was to fix an external oil leak (They leak oil via an oil passage which manifests itself as a leak by the base of the distributor... any earlyish AJ6 will need it fixed if it hasn't already been done). I have handled over 100 cars with this engine over the years and this is the only reason I have ever seen an AJ6 need a head gasket. Then I presume it was bought in Portland with a title issued 2/28/12. It then fails emissions in the bay area of CA 6/12/12, and was designated a 'Gross Polluter' and thus (according to the CARFAX report on photo #70) illegal to drive or sell in California. On 7/11/12 the title was updated in OR. This is certainly not the first time it's been to CA. When I bought the car back in 2012 I had it shipped to my brother's workshop in San Rafael to have him check it over. That was when I took it for smog and it failed, as you pointed out. So I drove it back home to Oregon up the I-5. This time however, I chose a more scenic route through the Klamath National Forest. The Jag is just so wonderful once it gets it legs stretched. I definitely recommend an XJS for long trips! They are sublime on a long drive, truly one of the best GT cars of the era. For those less familiar, I would add a few additional comments regarding this particular example. The 265 Getrag five-speed in these cars was carefully chosen by Jaguar for it's refinement and durability. Several suppliers provide a manual conversion for the V12 with these units and it has no trouble handling what the V12 throws at it. Modified Getrag gearboxes were used in the TWR race cars of the period, if I'm not mistaken. In my opinion, this is the best 5 speed option for these cars. Also, the European bumpers are sooo much better looking on the XJS then the N American units. They do not protrude in the way the US bumpers do, and really fit the lines and style of the car. You can see this easily in photos, but it is even more impressive in person. I personally swapped my bumpers on my own XJS, and the difference was quite impressive. Plus, the rear fog lights add a little extra eccentric look as well.
